Every now and then a world event happens that has me deeply confounded. The crash of Flight TWA 800 from new York to Paris is one of those. What really happened here? Can it really be as simple as a fuel tank that exploded. If that was the case, why did it not happen before in similar designed airplanes? For me this is still an unexplained event.

A fuel tank explosion could be caused by malfunctioning parts or weather/environmental problems; because it happened to one doesn't mean it has to happen to all types of that plane.
Yea, obviously they don't know the exact cause. But they did determine it to be because of the fuel tank explosion. Its just very hard to determine would caused the explosion. I surprised the conspiracy theorists haven't blamed it on Bush or something, or maybe they have I just haven't heard about.
I do think there are some theories that it could have been an accidental missile that had gone horribly wrong. But yes, I have not read conspiracy theories about it.
Think what hooked me was that there are quite a number of the same planes, and usually when there is a structural fault of a kind, it would have happened with other planes as well. This had been a one-off event. Totally puzzling.
