Making Hydrogen Sulfide

thequietman
Japan is making H2S quite the rage.

Odd that this is surfacing as a "detergent" based concoction.

Standard chemistry way to make H2S is to combine ZnS + HCl; see http://mattson.creighton.edu/H2S/index.html

iIn a search of the US government's database on household products, there are better "easy to get" items with which to make H2S besides "detergent" and "bath lotion"; see
see http://hpd.nlm.nih.gov/index.htm

What possible use could anyone have of H2S? It would just smell really bad.
Insanity
I'm sure that H2S is actually pretty toxic in higher concentrations because it is highly volatile and you could die from smelling the fumes.

Quite correct - it is EXTREMELY toxic. We can smell it around 0.01 parts per million (ppm). 50 ppm is enough to damage your eyes. 500 ppm will most likely kill you through lung damage. 1000 ppm will kill you in a single breath.

So why would something that smells like a stink bomb and could kill you so easily be "All the rage" in Japan? Is this the latest frog licking fad? Or is some fanatical group looking for a cheaper way to go than sarin gas?

I don't have a clue. My advice is - don't think about trying to make it yourself. It is relatively easy to manufacture, to be sure, but hammering a nail through your own chest is also easy to do.
