I've been making youtube videos for a bit, and windows movie maker is way too simple for me. I want to get a new editing program, and I was thinking about Sony Vegas 8. Anyone got anything good to say about it, or any recommendations for another?
recommended editing program?
Sony Vegas is a good choice, as Adobe Premiere Pro is better to some specific usage.
I prefer Apple Final Cut Pro, which runs more smooth and is more stable for what I do (HD footage).

I agree with previous poster. Adobe premier is the only editing program I use. I have not been able to not do anything I wanted to with that program

Yeah it's a great product. Combine that with After Effects and it's all you really need.
Windows movie maker is nice for simple editing stuff, if you want to move to advanced editing then I would recommend ulead video studio or sony vegas.
as you learn, you can switch over to Final Cut Pro

I tried vegas but it just didn't work well with me.

What I've heard Final Cut Pro is EXCELLENT, that is IF you own a Mac, and most of us don't...
If you've got a Mac than I'd recommend you to go for the Final Cut Studio 2, it's really cheap when you think that there comes 5 different programs and the price is something around 1200$. Not too bad.
I've been using Vegas for a long time. Right now I only have version 6 but once I get the money, I plan on upgrading to version 8 platinum. I would definitely recommend especially if you don't want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on an editing program.
I found Ulead MediaStudio 7 to be reasonable (the trial version of MediaStudio 8 had video-sound sync problems on my system, at least) for editing, though if you want to edit MPEG-2 without re-rendering (simple cutting and joining) then VideoRedo Plus (www.videoredo.com) is by far the best program I've come across. Simple, easy and even detects errors in the MPEG-2 stream.
either vegas or premiere are great for starting, and once you find out it's something you really want to do, you can move to linux or apple stuff... shake, etc...
newer tried vegas, but if you want a editing program I wouldnt use final cut because it cant export good quality avi. files. Only quicktime that is a lot slower.
I would go for adobe premiere, because its just got nice system with allot effects +++

I've been an editor for 7 years now and have used a wide variety of diffrent edit applications. It all really depends on what you are tryin to achieve, how skilled you are (experience) & budgets.
Entry Level:
# Pinnacle Studio V x
# Windows Movie Maker
# Apple iMovie
All these applications ar very limited in their capabilities however with some "out of the box" thinking you can achieve alot. Pinnacle systems hae always been a litte too constricting and buggy. Imovie and Movie Maker have been prven to work well for what they are.
Mid Level:
# Sony Vegas Movie Studio
# Adobe Premier Elements
Both of these are strong contenders and equally as good as eachother and both a good step above their contenders. They both have strengths and weknesses whci tend to balance themselves out. For me the scales sway towards Vegas as it is more intuitive.
Entry Level Pro:
# Adobe Premier Pro CS
# Sony Vegas
# Avid DV
Alot of people argue about which is better - Vegas or Premier. Well - when its a software only solution Vegas wins because, like its little brother, its far more intuitive. However Premier Pro has hardware accellaraion available and when this is applied it makeswork flows better. When we are ll runnig 16core CPU's Vegas will really shine tough.
Pro Level:
#Final Cut Pro
#Avid Pro System
I'll say FCP in this level as i can run withot the need of hardware unlike avods therefore to get an FCP suite up and running its cheaper. Running and maintenence come down well. Avid as a company are also in a worried state. While they are still a strong markt contender Apple really are dominating the markt with FCP and now with FCP Server up andrunning - I see Global domination as imminent.
Hope that gives u some insight...

fc pro is a bit hefty for youtube videos. I recommend final cut express. it has virtually unlimited audio/visual channels, is capable of pip and simple color correction. i just got it and it's confusing but works great. plus, it's affordable, though not cheap.

i hate movie maker and do not recommend it. it constantly freezes, has cheap-looking effects, and only exports in .wmv which is one of the worst formats
Premiere pro = best on Windows.
can you post some download links here?
try out using Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro..Add some effects by using After Effects..
Canopus Edius
Adobe Premiere Pro
Adobe After Effects
Sony Vegas

i use adobe premier pro and now change to cs3. it really good and easy to use. for me, it is the best.
Definitely Adobe Photoshop Elements! (version doesn't matter much)
Photoshop? You mean Premiere right?
Premiere Elements is brilliant, its simple and easy to use, yet diverse enough for any independent film maker (its very powerful). You'll be able to pick it up for a little under 100USD.

Anybody tried : Cyberlink powerdirector ..I tried it...its AWESOME....hs everything from giving effects to videos , background music for videos , readymade templates , functionality of directly converting to Youtube video , and the most Imp : user friendly..so itsvery easy & less time consuming
Another vote for Adobe Premiere here, i'm a big adobe fanboy but they do they job well. Tried Vegas also and its pretty good.
