Although "Half-Life", "Grand-Theft-Auto" and "Age of Empires" have left a lasting impression, I'd like to add a few older ones to the list such as "Leasure-Suit-Larry" and "Monkey Island" which, today, cannot compete graphically, but were eminently playable, intelligent and humorous adventures and, for almost a decade, constituted the avantgarde of computer gaming.
LostOverThere
Here's mine.

    -Half Life 2 (PC)
    -Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
    -Perfect Dark (Nintendo 64)
    -Any Vertigo Gaming Game (PC)
    -Lemmings (PC, others)
-A source Game (PC Editions are best)

Oh come on. That's an utterly terrible game. Monkey island is good though.

... and don't anyone mention anything to do with grinding through hundreds of monsters - muhmorpuguhs aren't really that good.

I would recommend Fire Emblem though. Just pick one of the GBA games and try it - it's really worth it.

Okay, let me work this out. The games we're posting are the ones that we particularly enjoyed. But, this is something that obviously varies from person to person, so other people have no more need to play that game than any other that's been called excellent before. Also, the games recommended to play 'before you die' are only going to be the ones that the poster has, in fact, already played. So ...

Oh, I get it!

Note to self: Play Advance Wars: Dual Strike. I love the Advance Wars series, and that's the one game in it I haven't played, and should do so before I die. Rolling Eyes

Also, I have the same thing about RuneScape. Never really understood why anyone would pay to play it though.

I had a an Atari 2600 (also know as the Atari VCS) on which I played Defender all the time.
I then moved onto a Commodore 64 and was hooked on Activision Decathlon and Falcon Patrol II amongst others.
Then I got myself an Amiga 500 with expanded memory and played Powermonger and Kick Off.
I also played Skidmarks on the Amiga 4000 at work.

I then moved onto the PC and Playstation. I have already posted about my fave PC games. On the PS1 I played Tony Hawk and Snowboarding games as well as Tekken 3 and FIFA 01.

Whzeb
I recommend Halo 3, i also like tiiba, it's a very nice rpg game, addicting...but nice.
wahoyaho
Couple of years ago I would have said Unreal Tournament 99, but seeing as how the online community has almost completely gone and none of the successors are remotely as fun, I can't say there is one game that must be played Mad
kitsrock
defcon - while it is not the greatest game ever made, it certainly is a game to try.
pontifex - a bridge building game, i was hooked on it for months.
toribash3 - a unique game engine that certainly deserves a try.

LostOverThere
I think at this point we've come to a conclusion where
    1) There's a lot of games required to play before you die, and
    2) Dying will only prevent you from playing many of the great games required to play before you die in the future

Though, while we're at it, everyone should be forced to play any underrated game, be that of Beyond Good and Evil, Madworld or Klonoa.
catscratches
I actually think Beyond Good and Evil was utter crap. :3
kriszara
Play at least one old fashioned paper-and-dice Role Playing game before you die.
3rd edition D&D is easy to learn and run, 4th edition is even easier but weighted toward lots of combat.
There are genres for every taste.
frecos
....I would say WOW, lol
toasterintheoven
two words... Chrono Trigger

There seem to be a lot of suggestions for just games that would be considered "good," but is there really any different criteria for "play before you die?" I think there needs to be more of a definition there...

Any good games you would recommend, which are similar to Stronghold Crusader or Age Of Empires II ? Smile
It seems that in last few years RTS game have lost the strategy part, seems there is more shooting and action, sometimes more than in some FPS games Sad

To play before you die? Well, Ocarina of Time is an obvious one because of its cultural significance. But other notable entries would include Half-Life 2 and, for me, Super Metroid.

Strategy games with strategy in them, you say? Well there's the Total War games for starters. I recommend Medieval 2 and Napoleon. Medieval 2 was the perfection of Rome TW and Napoleon was the perfection of Empire TW. The games are divided between the strategic map and tactical battles. So rather than building your civilisation on the front lines and sending your troops 100 metres to the enemy town like you do in AoE, it's a bit more realistic.

There's also Shogun 2 Total War due out some time next year.

If you want games that are really focussed on strategy then you could look into Paradox titles like Europa Universalis (which is 70% off at Gamersgate right now). As far as I know it handles the battles in a more Civilisation like manner. I might give those a try myself.
Flakky
I agree with a few of yours
Counter-Strike: Source
Half Life 1
Half Life 2
Donkey Kong Country 2
Pokémon RGY
Fable: the Lost Chapters
Unreal Tournament 2004
Call of Duty 4
Heavy Rain
GTA San Andreas
Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness
Tomb Raider Legend
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow of Chernobyl
The Sims

This list needs more horror games Smile
wombatrpgs
Actually, I'd appreciate a few old horror game recommendations... For PC though, and preferably older ones. Just played the SNES Clock Tower and moderately enjoyed it.

Once again, there's a pretty big distinction between "best" games and the sort of classics implied by the topic.

Well, there's always emulation...

I think lists like this are always stupid. "Things to play before you die" is just arbitrary and subjective. Are we look at influential or innovative games? Well polish games? Of course, even just deciding on these labels are equally meaningless, because an "innovative" game is no less subjective then a "game one needs to play before they die".

Of course, that's just my 2 cents.

Mechwarrior 4 - mercenaries

Can not die before playing any game created by Will Wright, Shigeru Miyamoto or Peter Molyneux. Not to mention the games developed by Bioware or Blizzard

I'm one for three... That feels bad. What titles from each would you recommend?

Big rigs: Over the road racing.

About the WORST game ever made? I think so... but its so much fun to play because its so ridiculous

As for good games, Grand Theft Auto 3. It is such an amazing game, its about 11 years old now but I still love it as much as when it came out when I was about 5 years old. The story, the atmosphere, it seems like everything is just better than GTA4 and the rest.

Wait, you're playing GTA at age 5...?
