we all have read about the tragic disaster in myanmar and the slow response by its military regime in dealing with it - or in accepting foreign organisations and countries help.

where does national responsibility - and indeed sovereignty - stop and responsibility as a "global family" begin?
and how far can this principle be stretched. if one country invades another (iraq)? if a population is "repressed" by its own regime (north corea to mention just one)? AND who is to judge (north corea to mention just one)?
is it time to re-think our global responsibilities and actually ACT as a global family?
in this particular case i think yes, the un should act quickly, with a clear international mandate but with as much respect for the national government as possible. these are our global brothers and sisters in dire need - how can we stand by and wait with a clear conscience.
may their maker have mercy on them - and on all that stand by and shrug their shoulders.
cheers?

| France is arguing that the U.N. has the power to intervene without the junta's approval to help civilians under a 2005 agreement that the world body has a "responsibility to protect" people when governments fail to do it. That agreement did not mention natural disasters. |
