Check Engine Light

Magicman
My check engine light came on in my car today and when I lifted the hood, I saw something I didn't expect. Apparently, a mouse had decided to make a nest on my engine over the weekend while my car was parked. It chewed on my spark plug wires potentially knocking out two of my four cylinders.

Have any of you had any weird reasons for your check engine light to come on like this? This light goes on because of so many problems so some other people probably have funny causes for it to come on.

As a side question, I'm pretty sure I fixed the problem but now the light is still on. Does anyone know how to shut it off?

Try disconnecting your battery for half an hour or so, this should reset the computer. Alternatively it could be that the leads were earthing on something in the engine bay and there was too little resistance and you damaged your coil-packs.

Friend of mine drove her car for 70+km with both the engine light and the oil light on after not changing the oil in over 2 years - and that whole 70ks wondering why it was making funny noises at her.
Needless to say, that car was a writeoff afterwards.

Thanks for the info but it ended up shutting off by itself today. And wow, it doesn't seem like your friend knows how to take care of a car very well.

One time at the place I used to work, squirrels chewed the wires inside a felow employee's car, making it not start. (The tree rats were very prevalent there).

Once at the same place, my old jeep went from working just fine to having a dead battery and NO oil at all, without any apparent cause, and without making any puddle or stain. I have no idea where that oil went or how that happened to this day. (after fixing those two problems, it worked fine and never did such a thing again...)

Somebody probably stole your oil Laughing It is already expensive, I could deffiniately see someone stealing oil.

And they stole the power out of the battery too, eh?

Its not funny - happened to my mums car once. She took her commodore (ecotec 3800/GM-4L60E) into the dealership she bought it from, and not only did they charge $1200 to replace two gaskets but they stole her oil too! Couple days later the top end was making painful noises so she took it back to them. As it turned out an apprentice had forgotten to replace the motor oil after doing the gaskets - which could only really be described as a mess of bright orange goo.
