for the worlds richest nation nothing seems impossible

BAGHDAD - Forget the rocket attacks, concrete blast walls and lack of a sewer system. Now try to imagine luxury hotels, a shopping center and even condos in the heart of Baghdad.

That's all part of a five-year development "dream list" — or what some dub an improbable fantasy — to transform the U.S.-protected Green Zone from a walled fortress into a centerpiece for Baghdad's future.

But the $5 billion plan has the backing of the Pentagon and apparently the interest of some deep pockets in the world of international hotels and development, the lead military liaison for the project told The Associated Press.

or just another case of "we know best"????

One diplomat, who asked not to be named because of no authorization to speak to the media, said they did not think Iraqis would want Washington to "turn this area into downtown Kansas City."

i heard there are some poor and needy people living actually in the usa as well. how come we never see any investment ideas for them? apart from election promises of course, but they are just promises so far..............

cheers
ganesh
As Bush had already said (or rather, Bush's puppet string pullers have made him say), they are planning to recover the 'investment' in Iraq through oil money! Exposes the 'capitalist' mindset of Bush and his cronies. Wish 'capitalism' was put to better use!

This version of "downtown redevelopment" sounds like a highly unlikely pipe dream, especially if it is proposed that it be done with American funding. The US has recently declared that further development projects should be paid for by the Iraqis, which seems appropriate at this point since there is oil export money they can use for that purpose. Of course, the pentagon or whoever is free to suggest such a project to the Iraq government, but I believe the Iraq government will wisely choose not to fund a project which can only make them appear to be subservient to US interests.
