downgrading to XP

Srs2388
I have a question I do know this has been discussed before, but I am having trouble with it.
here is what I have on my boot menu.
Vista.
XP
Mac OS
Vista works. I go to XP and get some crazy error. So. I want a smaller partition for vista.
(I do want to keep vista)
I want XP to be installed over the current vista installation.
I want it to be default. I want the XP's boot handler to be default.
I installed windows XP on a different partition and it messed everything up and it wouldn't even show up.
I'm really confused here.
I had to put my vista disk in and repair it to get the boot selection up.
please and thank you.
I just want my system to be way faster. Vista runs surprisingly well. I just want it faster.
I have 2GB of ram and a duo core AMD Turion 64X 1.90Ghz.

my internet is messing up again... so it could be a bit before i reply =[

Quick question. Is your Vista 64 bit and your XP 32? Or vice versa? Or are they both the same?
If they're different, that could cause some errors.
I would say that going to XP x64 is actually an upgrade from vista.

You might try using a 3rd party boot loader... It is possible that doing that could make everything work without reinstalling any windows... Also, you could see if you could get any software like partition magic, which should help in resizing partitions without loosing data. The biggest problem is that XP (and probably vista too) like to put their boot loaders in the first partition of the first drive, no matter where you install the actual OS. It is very likely that one of them is overwriting the required boot files of the other. If you had two separate hard drives, I would recommend disabling one while you installed the other OS on the other, then using a 3rd party boot loader.
