I am new to the forum.
Well can you please tell me which one will be better to host a forum.
will that be SMF or PHPBB?
also can i add mods and hacks in SMF too.

smf are good but he needs some one know how to use it
phpbb are small and easy to control so ithink phpbb are best
well, I must say I've tried both, but I know a little of smf, but have a larger experience on phpbb, and for sure I prefer phpBB 
Have years of experience with phpBb and YaBBse(smf).. gotta say that SMF is better.
Well this is an endless fight...
Just use them both and chose the system that fits you the best.
i mean, if you fill comfortable with SMF - use it!
I use phpBB.
It's easy to use, to administrate.
A like it.
But I've not teste the other.

I've had both in use on my site at one point or another, though I stuck with SMF - I like it better, seems cleaner to me. The selection of themes isn't as great, but there's nothing wrong with the software - I prefer it.
Administration is definitely better than PHPbb.
well yes I agree with you that phpbb admin control is simple.
But SMF has some futures which are really useful.
Like you see the NEWS BOX
and then many other futures....

1. Install both systems.
2. See which ones you like.
3. If you pick SMF, I can't help you.
4. If you pick phpBB, go look for the NEWS BOX hacks on www.phpbb.com or www.phpbbhacks.com . There are losta hacks out there to make it look like IPB or SMF.SMF as it has a built in feature to allow you to just click to enable / disable mods. where as phpbb you have to sit and edit text files.
(im aware of the Ezmod mod but it wasnt very widely used last time i checked)
its also just a lot nicer than phpbb, and ive found it just as easy to use.
I'm not trying to spark a flame war here.
But imagine, if you use that auto installer and something screws up? Auto-installers are spoonfeeding people. More and more programs are getting too spoonfeeding. If you edit stuff yourself, you LEARN.
Yes, but if you've edited "stuff" for years and you have a headache from that? like me? 
Nah, SMF is just better imo.. not only because of the auto installer, but also beacause of the control panels and the interface itself.
My board(signature) is powered by SMF. Helios, you can never stop learning stuff. You learn stuff till you die 
. So when you know everything you supposed to know you die? DAMN! 
I'm afraid now.. =P
