Mailer settings in Joomla

In the Global Configuration screen of Joomla 1.0.13 I have the choice to set the mailer as "sendmail" or "PHP mail function" or "SMTP Server".
Can somebody help me in this matter?

It depends on what email you want to use. The best and easiest option would be to use the PHP Mail Function. All you need to do is put your email address you want as the sender and then your name. If you're using an email that isn't from frihost, you'll need to put the SMTP Host and most likely the Username and Password.

Great ! it works perfectly. Even with my own private email address. I was convinced that it was necessary to use a frihost-account when setting the mailer on PHP function.
