I'm bored so I thought I would check out some new movies.
Here's my favorites.
1. The Alien/s movies, obviously
2. The thing
3. Event Horizon
4. The Abyss
5. The Cube movies
Without internal order, here are five good ones:
* Stargate (Movie, Series, Spinn-off-series, spinn-off-movie... need I say more?)
* Blade Runner (though the book's better...)
* 12 Monkeys (Gilliam, makes you think twice)
* Starship troopers (Death from above!!!
)
* Tank Girl (It's funny)
Since you did not ask for top 5 favorites or top-grossing, I would tend to pick those films which most closely adhered to the spirit of classic science fiction a la Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury, ...
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick, 1968)
- Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927)
- Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1972)
- Fahrenheit 451 (François Truffaut, 1966)
- The Day the Earth Stood Still (Robert Wise, 1951)
... but the list of runner-ups is endless ... (alphabetically:)
- Back to the Future 1 to 3 (various)
- Brazil (Terry Gilliam, 1985)
- Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982)
- Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick, 1971)
- Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Steven Spielberg, 1977)
- Contact (Robert Zemeckis, 1997)
- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Steven Spielberg, 1982)
- The Incredible Shrinking Man (Jack Arnold, 1957)
- Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1993)
- The Matrix (Andy and Larry Wachowsk, 1999)
- Planet of the Apes (Franklin J. Schaffner, 1968)
- Rollerball (Norman Jewison, 1975)
- Stalker (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1979)
- Star Wars 1 to 6 (various)
- Terminator 1 + 2 (various)
- The Thing from Another World (Howard Hawks/Christian Nyby, 1951)
- Tron (1982)
- Westworld (Michael Crichton, 1973)
- ...
Good special effects are nice to have, but have little to do with science fiction.
Sci-Fi movies.....
1. Blade Runner
2. Aliens 1 & 2
3. Star Wars 4 to 6
4. The Abyss
5. The Thing
i am a new memberi am a new member
1) Event horizon
2) Alien/Aliens

Some of my top picks are a little... iffy as to scifi classification, but I consider them scifi.
1. The Fifth Element
2. Spaceballs (a comedy, but somewhat scifi)
3. Deep Impact
4. Tron
5. Star Wars: Attack of the clones
a varied list here indeed!
my favs are
1) back to the future
2) 2001
3) contact (although - they did almost spoil the film it was a really rocking book)
4) star wars
5) star trek movies
Narrowing down at the Sci Fi movies to a top five? That's tough... they're all so different! But mine would have to be:

Seriously? I loved episode 1!
Now I enjoy (its not really a movie), but Stargate Atlantis is really cool. For those who didn't see it yet, watch the first episode and see if you like it. Also watch Stargate SG1 ofcourse!
Ofcourse I also like all the star wars episodes, those are classic. I found Event Horizon very scary though
-Terminator 1 & 2, the third one ended with a bit of a WTF? element. It ruined the whole storyline, and barely made sense.
-Alien Vs Predator 2 - Requiem. The second one was much better than the first in terms of graphical effects and surprise factors.
-Transformers. Instant Pwnage. How they managed to do all those effects in every second of the movie was just simply amazing. The story was short, but, it was a great improvement to all those cliche cartoon episodes. Yeah, I did use to watch them. Don't ask why.
Just saw Keenu Reeves- the day the earth stood still -
they (he) came to save the world and left with just destroying about half of it......
- 12 Monkeys
- Ghost in the Shell (all of it, movies, SAC series, all)
- Donnie Darko
- Blade Runner
- Back to the Future (series)
1. Serenity
2. The Matrix
3. Back To The Future
4. Terminator 2
5. 2001
I feel that E.T. and Contact also deserve special mention, since I very nearly included them in the list.
