Hello All
A strange thing has been happening recently with Excel 2007 on my PC (Windows XP SP2).
If I open Excel and then double-click on an Excel document in Windows Explorer, both the program and the document open instantaneously.
However, if I double-click on an Excel document before opening Excel, then it takes a whole minute for the document to appear!
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here, and how to fix it?
Thanks.

M$ Office 2007 is a big sham. You can open all M$ Office documents using OpenOffice.org and it's free! If you really need M$ Office, you should try to get the older versions instead of the 2007 version. It's going to be incompatible with the older stuff without the extra compatibility add-on (which of course makes it even slower than normal).
If you decide to keep using M$ Office, good luck. If you want free software from the Open Source community and other free licenses, then try OpenOffice.org. It much faster and leaner than the M$ applications.
Hi BrianElliott0218
Thanks for the suggestion. I really love free software (who doesn't?), so I'll give it a try.
However, as I've bought Office 2007, I feel entitled to having it to work properly!
Well, it will take longer because windows has to open the excel program and then file.
However, if the problem is that doubleclicking takes longer than doing that manually then you do have a problem but I'm afraid I don't know how to fix it (short of wipe-reinstall).

Probably it takes longer because in between windows is opening excel program and the file you have the antivirus scanning the file.
Try to turn off your antivirus and see if the problem persist.
I still use Office 2K on my XP 64-bit system. Works like a champ.
Office 2007 was pretty much developed as a money-making scam for businesses to buy more into MS.
IN hopes of answering your question, though... what process do you have running? Is there anything peculiar in your process list that shouldn't be there? Or that you question?
Hello Craeft
Thanks for your 11th April post:

I would appreciate any help on this weird issue.
I should stress:
1. This is a nearly new PC with lots of horse power.
2. If I open Excel 2007 and then double-click a document, both the program and the document open practically instantaneously.
3. If I double-click a document without previously opening Excel 2007, then Excel opens immediately, but it takes a whole minute for the document to be displayed!
4. This whole situation just happened from one day to the next. Maybe I installed something that did this (e.g. a Microsoft Critical Update
), but I can't remember.
So here, for starters, is the output of tasklist:

Hello Folks,
After nearly 2 months, I'm still waiting for a solution to this problem!
Fortunately, I've discovered a work-around - When I double-click an Excel document without starting Excel first (which means I'll have to wait 60 seconds for the document to open) , then, as soon as Excel appears, I double-click the document again, and it opens pronto.
I need hardly say that I am not very happy with this arrangement - and I find it difficult to believe that (a) nobody else is experiencing this problem and (b) nobody has a solution for it!
So, once again, please help me out if you can.
Hello Folks
I finally found a solution to this problem, and it's really simple.
For anyone with the same problem, here's what you do:
Add the parameter %1 for files of type of Excel 97-2003 in the “OPEN” settings of Explorer file associations as follows:
- Launch “Windows Explorer”
- Click Menu Tools -> Folder Options
- Click Tab “File Types”
- Select item XLS in the list
- Click Button “Advanced”
- Select Open in the list
- Click button “Edit”
- Then add “%1” after /e in the box “Application used to perform action:”
- Disable "use DDE"
and that's it!
I found this solution here
Hello Folks
I'm afraid the solution I posted 2 days ago was not as good as I thought: it causes every spreadsheet that I open to open a NEW instance of Excel!
So I restored the original settings (which I had to finish off by editing the registry directly, to delete a pesky %1 that Windows for some reason kept on adding back in after I removed it!).
The GOOD solution is also very simple: Install the "Lookup Wizard" add-in in MS Excel:
1. Open Excel, and click the ball Office logo at the top-left of the program
2. Click button "Excel Options"
3. Select item "Add-Ins"
4. Select "Excel Add-Ins" in Manage list box (at the bottom of the window) and click button "Go..."
5. Tick the "Lookup Wizard" add-in and click button "OK"
6. Wait while Excel installs the add-in
This solution is also from here.
I should point out that this problem arises when opening Excel 2003 format *.xls files (rather than Excel 2007 format *.xlsx).
I didn't know the problem was was specific to this situation when I first found the problem, since up to now I have worked exclusively in the old *.xls format for compatibility with other PC's that still have Office 2003.
