Black Churches

Are black churches being portrayed unfairly in the news lately?
What ballpark percentage of predominately black congregational churches is Rev. Jeremiah Wright typical of?

If you haven't heard of him, you can Google him to get tons of youtubes and articles.

Never been to a black church...so I could be speaking out of my ass Razz

Honestly, I think black churches have this type of common rhetoric. However, Wright drastically blew it out of proportion and dramatized it to the max. I don't think all (or even a lot) of black pastors behave in this manner. They have the same demeanor in their sermons as Wright did (as in how they use their voice), but the material they spread isn't near what Wright said. Wright said some incredible stupid and ignorant things..however, he did make a couple valid points/observations (he just blew them up way too much).

I don't think black churches are being portrayed wrongly..not exactly at least. The media has shown these clips and all, but they really haven't talked a whole lot about the black church in general. More so about how this relates to Obama and all the political junk Very Happy I'm sure some people are getting false impressions of black churches, but the media isn't really focusing on that and they're not trying to portray/generalize all black churches based on these clips, in my opinion.

To be frank, I think the real topic in this situation is how the media has completely destroyed Obama's campaign within a week with the use of 12 second sound bytes and videos. Kind of silly and disturbing that the media has THIS much control over Presidential elections. Obama is getting hammered...and all three candidates have crazy nutbags on their campaign spreading insane crap. But that's a whole nother thread entirely and not for this section of the forum Razz

His compaign is hardly destroyed at all, all be it hindered. It's nothing compared to how devastating the media was to poor Howard Dean in 2004. He went from the frontrunner to dropping out in a fortnight...

And as for being portrayed unfairly?
Of course. Everything the media covers is 80% one sided and biased whether they mean it to be or not. Its just how things end up being. However i still think that racism is a problem, whether or not a black man or a white man happens to be the one spouting hate speech.

Well now, hang on. i don't think anyone seriously believes that Obama is a racist, do they? i can't be bothered to watch American news - you get better coverage from Jon Stewart for christ's sake - so i don't know how this thing is being spun there... but my understanding is that it is not questioning whether Obama is racist or not, but rather it is questioning his integrity in attending services run by an outspoken racist.

Seriously, if i was in a church, and the pastor started spouting KKK rhetoric, i would stand up and walk out. And even if it was a situation where standing up and walking out would be inappropriate - let's say at a funeral, for example - i would certainly have words with the pastor after the fact, i would openly, publicly condemn him if he didn't apologize, and i wouldn't go back.

Obama, apparently, went back. Again and again. And, not only did he not criticise the pastor, he spoke well of him on several occasions.

i don't believe the man is a racist. i believe he is an idiot, or at least a weakling. He did great disservice to himself and everyone in that church by not being the leader he is campaigning to be, and saying something about the hate speech the moment he first heard it. He may not have bought it, but someone in that church might have, and by not speaking out against it, Obama was sending the message that it is acceptable. Either he was an idiot, and he didn't realize how harmful providing even tacit support to that kind of ranting is... or he is a weakling, and he didn't have the balls to speak out against it.

Either way, i am severely disappointed in him. Hearing about this thing has not made me think he's racist, but it has made me think less of him as a man.

Since I've never been, I can't really tell you.
