Abiotic stress

yagnyavalkya
World population is increasing at an alarming rate and is expected to reach about six billion by the end of year 2050. On the other hand agricultural productivity is showing a decrease due to water shortages, depleting soil fertility and abiotic stresses; therefore minimizing these losses is a major area of concern for all nations to cope with the increasing food requirements . Drought, salinity, temperature and heavy metal accumulation are among the major environmental stresses, which adversely affect plant growth and productivity. What are the methods to cope up with this situation

I think the world's population will be well over six billion by 2050.

Well, the thing is about the world leaders. They've made so many problems for each other and their countries that, well, who has the time to care about ozone or pollution when there's another country bombing your country each and every day?

People don't know the full scope and damage that is being done to the Earth each day. Little girls going to their neighbours, asking for their bottles to recycle isn't going to get the world anywhere. World leaders need to stop thinking about which country to attack next, and start thinking about how they're going to reduce 02 omissions, green-house gases, and fossil fuel residue into the atmosphere.

Beginning is half the work. Nowadays it's all "this is what we could do", or "here's an idea for what we could do." We have enough ideas, they need to performed now.

THe US already raised tax to pay for the armor and bombs we use for the war on iraq and stuff.
For the new election in US, I wonder which will bring our community's stability back

Really? So you think it will go down then?
It's currently 6,602,224,175 (give or take a few hundreds of thousands)..
On current trends it should hit around 9 billion by 2050

9 BILLION? How is earth going to hold and feed that many adults/kids? Although that's a stupid question, Its curiosity >_<

Quite easy to hold that many, less easy to feed them. You could easily stand the world population in an area about half the size of Scotland (it used to be said that you could fit the world population onto the Isle of Wight in the UK - but that's no longer the case).
Feeding the population is more problematic. The US rush to bio-fuel is not helping things, neither is the resistance to GM in the EEC. The issues are mostly economic and political, however - there is plenty of land on which to grow sufficient food crops to support a population of 9 billion - actually much more than enough.

There is no doubt plenty of land but the the quality of land for cultivation is not the same and will notbe the same thread actually was meant to explore the methods or ways to fight abiotic stress caused by land as well as climate change
Although one third of the total land area is considered as potentially suitable for arable agriculture, only 10% of the world’s 13 billion hectares is cultivated. Various forms of abiotic stresses limit production on most of the world’s 1.4 billion ha. of cultivated land. Irrigation will not be a practical solution as water becomes scarcer, and the irrigation already in place will lead to soil salinisation . Solutions to the problem of abiotic stresses will be as complex as the problem itself. In nature, stress does not occur in isolation and many stresses act together.

I was being sarcastic; I already know the world's population will be over 9 billion by 2050.

That OK but again you cannot "KNOW" the future you can only expect or predict it !?
HalfBloodPrince
Alright. I 'expect' the world's population to be over 9 billion by 2050...

The population is not a problem. Agricultural production is. Humans should be able to take care of that if they put their heads together. Flying food to other countries is not the answer, to increase the economy and livlihood of other countries they need to be able to grow food.

Err...wasn't it you who said that it was expected to reach 6 billion by 2050? I'm sure I read that....

Quite easily, at least in theory.

The existing farmland in Africa could feed 22 billion people if they used modern Western agricultural techniques.

I said It is expected to reach and not I know
Guess you can read clear English?

Oh yes, I can read. However, since it is already about 6.5 billion I'm puzzled as to why you think it might go down by 2050...
(and I think it would be advisable to 'lay-off' comments about my comprehension of English, since I studiously try to ignore your mistakes in the language...people in glass houses...)

The glass house comment thing could not have been better only that I live in a rented glass house ( eng is not my native lang) you live in your own glass house
Anyway
Thanks you the right to have your opinions and you also have the choice to do what ever you want in the forum
So does Indi and everybody else
any way I think I did go a little bit too far in my postings in the last couple of days
I agree with everything you say including the sop called saw man tech but I was not dishonest
I was actually being provocative and in fact I am ashamed that I did succeed
