Indian Railway Site Fails to deliver when its the most...
This is my 3rd worst experience when I have used irctc.co.in for booking online tickets. One can start tatkal booking from 8:00 hrs but the site never allows you to do so. Genreally, from 8:00 hrs to 9:00hrs the site shows a message Service Un available.
This is truely un imaginable. Its like you are standing in a queue and waiting for your turn to book ticket. Whats the use of getting it online then.
I think they have failed to deliverable.

Never encountered this problem, but I can book normal e-tickets and i-tickets right after 8AM. May be since you are trying for tatkal, and tatkal is a bit complex scheme of booking tickets, you are not able to book tatkal right after 8... Dunno for sure though

Hey.. I bet if you are trying now days when there is a season, you will definately find the site responding very bad.
Today only I lost Rs. 2000 as there was session fail for irctc while being redirected after payment confirmation.. Also, this is not a problem from my end as I was booking it from Companies net which is a very high speed and at 8:00 hrs when there were no users apart from me..
I think they really need to make the site very simple without any advertisement like indianrail.gov.in
Which works faster for showing availability..
Yeah that's correct. IndianRail.gov.in responds quicker than irctc. And yes, yesterday and day before yesterday, I struggled a lot with irctc website to get my ticket... It's getting worse, I think. Laloo must allocate funds to increase the server capacity of irctc.
I don't and didn't find any problem with the site...!!!

Absolutely.. and i think the agents play a important role in this.. they get logged in early morning hogging all the resources..
They should have some other interface I think..

as far as i'm aware, indianrail.gov.in is using a large server farm.... whenever you check the schedule, fare, etc. the name of the server gets printed near the footer.. (VEGA, VENUS, etc.) and IRCTC, maybe is using only a few servers..
however both the websites, have not optimized thier HTML output and so on... lets all blame http://cris.org.in/wps/portal/CRISPortal ... these are the guys responsible to build both indianrail and IRCTC

Absolutely dude.. also the addes posted makes the site response slower in peak hours.. I think the site is more for utility than publicity and money making.. for this they should keep the site as simple as possible...
Overall, the design is pretty horrible for both the sites. There are to many links and too many distractions. I've never tried to book tickets online, but I have frequently checked availability of seats for certain dates. Normally, that works quite well, and quite fast.
More of all the main requirement of booking the tickets from source to destination is not directly visible. Its down below in the site and that too in a very small font.
I think the basic things like:
1. Imp Stn and Imp Trains
2. Source to Destination
3. PNR Enquiry
should be visible very clearly...
