question regarding my macbook desktop feature

TurtleShell
Just discovered accidentally that there's some way to make all the items on my desktop appear at once in a miniaturized view. When you roll over a particular window the window tells you what it is (Firefox, Safari, Word document untitled, etc). Then you can click on whatever window you want. This is apparently an easy effect to achieve on a destop, but on the macbook...well, I don't know.

Didn't know it could do that. How did this happen? I think it must be a keyboard command.

That is called Exposé. To show all of the open windows hold the function key (FN) and press F9. To show all of the running programs hold FN and then press F10. To show the desktop hold FN and press F11.
