Softwares for Command Line Freaks...

ganesh
Are there any users out there who are addicted to doing stuff through the command line? Maybe you are used to Linux / Unix at your university or workplace, but can't get rid of the Windows machine for your personal use?

What sort of tools do you use to get the proper 'shell' experience in Windows?

I use the following:

Windows Power Shell (Monad) : This provides a nice scripting environment within Windows, and best of all, it is tailored such that many *nix commands work in a nice way inside it!

PowerCmd : This makes it easier for me to create Terminals / Konsoles, with tabs in them, split consoles into different screens, and so on. Within each PowerCmd tab, I start the Windows Power Shell, and voila! I can get almost the *nix experience with Windows, and I am able to run all Windows programs properly too!

What softwares do you use for a nice command line experience?

I use the Command Line a lot, both in Windows and Linux. In windows I have the windows-ports of all the standard unix shell tools installed (http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/): grep, tail, awk, sort, find, sed, make, etc. Combined with Perl (http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Downloads/ActivePerl/) for automating stuff, I find that there isn't much I do with Linux which can't be done in the windows shell.

There are also windows/dos ports of bash and other shells (http://www.steve.org.uk/Software/bash/), but I never tried one.

That is a nice blog with good explanations! I already have the GNU Win32 ports on my machine, and am also a decent Perl programmer Smile

The issue, even on my current Linux desktop (KDE 3.3), is that the Konsole program doesn't allow split tabs. So, I need to open multiple Konsole windows when I want to look at multiple command line outputs simultaneously ( This issue is apparently solved in KDE 4, but my organization is yet to upgrade Sad ). Of course, the Gnome desktop terminal program is no better!

On Windows, there is a freeware program to have multiple (but, not split) tabs (Console2 -- available on SourceForge), but PowerCmd is the best that I have seen so far. Not only does it allow console window tabs, it also allows split tabs! Of course, it is not free, but I hope the Console2 developer takes a leaf out of PowerCmd and puts in that feature soon!

Batch Scripting or BASH Scripting?
minty
I have never messed with PowerCmd or Windows Shell, however, I am always in the cmd prmpt making scripts of all sorts. For instance, I got tired of having to click through explorer to find my commonly used programs, so I created batch script w/ menus for me to open all of my commonly used programs and directories with ease.
