What is happiness? What is your perception of it? How do you achieve it?
Do you think that true happiness is even possible in this day and age?

Happiness is what we make it.
I dont believe in a god, Im not rich (even rather poor), Ive went through alot of family problems since early childhood, Ive gone through some social problems, Ive got out of a 3 or more year depression related to how shitty this world is but eventually I discovered my source of happiness.... which is my girlfriend
. She is my first, love, girlfriend, everything, and even though I encounter problems with her from time to time, im still motivated by the fact that life is what you make it, meaning that if I want to be the perfect boyfriend, filled with passion, love and forgiveness, I can be him.
mine is a bit weird..
Happiness is when a pain changes into something pleasurable
when you first open your eyes, you were blinded by different lights entering your eyes, but when you got used to it, you were happy and begins to admire your surrounding
when you first tried to ride a bike, you fell a couple of times and got hurt, but after learning the trade, you were riding the wind going from places to places
when you first had s3x, you bled, but after a few more times, you wanted even more
that's happiness, conquering pain and converting it into something pleasurable by getting used to it
Happiness is a state of mind in which you (or more accurately your mind) things that everything is amazing and all is working perfectly. Maybe its based on some complex chemical reactions in your brain, but that could be said about everything happening in human body. God only knows why he gave us such a good feeling:)
You can actually choose happiness - they are book writen about the subject - tecniques how to awoid unhappiness in every situation.

It is often said that money does not equal happiness. E.g. "money can't buy happiness".
But i don't think that's fully true. Having lots of money, means you aren't starving, are sleeping under a roof, get a good education and thus a good job, and so on.
What do you think?
Peace.
money cant buy happiness
but money can buy the things that will make you happy

For me, happiness is when you have your inner peace. We all encounter problems and sad situations; they are part of everybody’s life. But if you have a goal, something that will motivate you to go through life and live it… Money is important but surely not essential for happiness. Health and something to live for are much more important! That’s my opinion.
Money buys you a waverunner. Find me one person riding a waverunner who is frowning and feels like killing themselves.
Happiness is feelings of umirotverennosti and calmnesses plus love.
happiness comes from within. When we try too hard to search for happiness outside of ourselves, thats when we becomes UNhappy. Happiness and peace are strongly related. When we are at peace with ourselves, when we let go of our judments, our fears, our anxieties, our negative thoughts we begin to come closer to our higher self. it's our ego that gets in the way of our understanding of our divine truth and understanding. I truely believe that everyone has a higherself within them that KNOWS how to be happy, that knows the answers to everything. We just have to call upon it, and release our ego that wants to hold on so tightly. When we say goodbye ego, and hello to our higherselves we reach true peace, true happiness, true joy. I am struggling everyday with the struggle of balancing the ego with my higher self. It's difficult because we cannot physically completely rid ourselves of the ego. The ego protects us from harm and wether we like it or not often shows up mutiple times during the day when crisis arises. The true masters of the universe, the angels, the people who appear to have reached enlightment know how to control their ego. We will learn through our whole life how to do it and many people will never know how to completely gain control of it. But by even attempting to we make immense progress. By attempting to be great, to connect with our higherself, we get that much closer to attaining peace and happiness.
Happiness is overrated.
Joy is where it's at, and that is found in Jesus. Happiness becomes a cheap, temporary substitute for what we are really meant for. C.S. Lewis puts it well:
"There is a kind of happiness and wonder that makes you serious. It is too good to waste on jokes."
Not saying that jokes are bad....I just think we settle for temporary happiness when things get a lot better focusing on eternity.
~ Doug
I don't really think that you're happy 24/7... So happiness is temporary. But so is unhappiness. And if you're just constantly religious and don't ever question your faith (or "joy") then you're on the way to brainwashing.
We all need to question our beliefs at some time (yes, applies to atheist as well, I'm not trying to tell you that you're wrong in your religion here -.-).
I AM HAPPY 24/7
AND I AM NOT Lieing

happiness is not a destination, but a journey. you will never be completly fulfilled in life until you die.
You are born and you die, what happens in between you have to fill in yourself. I try to make myself happy, and proud because of things (that makes me happy too).
I try to live life to the max.
ladybugzox is right, you should die laughing, lol. funny name by the way.
@soug it's your own choice, but i would try to be happy in this life too, time goes by fast, and there may be times were you can't be happy, have at least some good memories for then.
I like to think of life as a hire-car. You get it for a certain period. If you drive like a dickhead then that period will be reduced somewhat. Alternatively some other dickhead might drive into you and produce the same 'end of rental'.
You can drive at 30mph and arrive at the end with the car in perfect condition. Alternatively you can stick your foot down and arrive with the tyres worn out, the engine gasping and a really big grin on your face....
I think you know which one I prefer
Money can't buy happiness; it can, however, rent it.

Happiness is the absence of sadness, and vice versa - like the ying yang theory. but i digress.
When you get out of a horrible situation you feel happiness, because you do not have to deal with that bull anymore. When you are flung back into that same situation you feel a sense of loss, eg sadness.
Happiness is a lesser form of love. It is something that cannot be bought, rented, or stolen. it is something you achieve for yourself by setting goals and reaching them, working hard to get to where you want to be.
True happiness comes not from wanting another's belongings, but wanting the belongings you already posess. It is rare, but quite possible. I am happy at the moment, but not truely happy, as I am not satisfied with everything I have.
like my grandpappy always said: if you can't find happiness in a shotglass, you can always find it at the bottom of the bottle.
Happiness is a state of mind... At times we feel happy and at times we dont.... Its just that different acts make us happy... there are people with whom we feel happy (e.g girlfriend/boyfriend)...

happines is not the absence of sadness, when you are angry you aren't sad but you are not really happy either. It's far more complicated
Did you know?
That it is determined by a research that how often you are happy is partly determined by your genes?
It IS also determined that it also depends on the amount of money you make. (MONEY DOES MAKE HAPPY!)
Happiness is the when the mind is content. I personally believe happiness can be achieved without any material possessions or other additional beings. It all depends on how far you will bend your perception of events.
Well happiness doesn't come around much for some persons, and alot for others.
You can create your own happiness but you must be a bit lucky ofc to gain it.
I think its when you get the inner feeling of good, of some sort about something you recieved, did, or see .....
I read above here money doesn't make you happy I agree
but no money can make you sad, wich is a big truth in my eyes
Friends and family make you happy
for myself my gf makes me happy, she can make me very happy by doing little things, when I'm with her I feel like I can take on the world.
so what is happiness ....
well I don't know for sure but what I do know is that you have to put yourself open in the world, so you can recieve it, if you walk around closed for everybody you will never be as happy as you can be.
First off, true happiness can be achived even in your last moments of death. To me happiness is achived and percieved through the most important thing on this planet. LOVE. Extreme love for someone, whether it's your spouse, friend, or some random stranger, brings out that feeling that's buried deep inside. A feeling that's so powerrful that it can influence our actions, thoughts and speech. Jesus even spoke about love and care in the Good Samaritan parable
TEXTS
Luk 10:30-35 [+ 25-29, 36-37]
[25 Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" 27 He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"]
30 Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.
[36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" 37 He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."]
Love is the most important aspect in our lives.
Have a Great day!

In Bhgabat Gita (Hindu mythology) once Lord Krisna asked Arjuna--Tell me who is happy? and Arjuna replied-- The man who work hard for the whole day, doesnot have any debit to any one, does not have any illness , have rice and vegetable as his food at the end of the day and can sleep peacefuly--is a happy man. But in the modern consumer world where credit card is a standard and the motto is --enlarge your pocket according to your cost , perhaps the above should be modified as--
HAPPINESS IS IN DREAM ONLY AND PEACE IS AFTER DEATH(IN THE GRAVE YARD).
Happiness = the ability to create
Write music, song lyrics, poetry, create a website, create art, create relationships, create friendships...etc.
Kind of random:
I see a lot of people asking if others are happy with their job or where they work. And honestly, that's a silly question that doesn't mean much. Most people aren't happy with their job and they could easily find ten things at their job to complain about. Not many people actually love working every single day. Happiness comes with what you do outside of work...and that's where the above advice comes in.
Although I'm quite young, there's absolutely nothing in this world that I've experienced that comes close to the feeling of having created something great that you and others can appreciate. Kind if inexplainable with words.
This is an interesting question, and one I think we all think about all the time. And the more I think about it, the more I think I have no idea what it is. Here's a cool video that just reminds me how tough it is.
http://www.wildsound-filmmaking-feedback-events.com/happiness.html
But hey, it's not necessarily the what of happiness, but the how we achieve it and how we feel about ourselves and the lives we lead.
Happiness is.
Thats it. Right there. Happiness is. Its simply being. Everything about it. And if simply existing doesn't make you happy, then your looking at it wrong. Its all in your outlook. Something good can be made out of anything.
I think happiness can only exist through having its opposite in place. If you cannot be sad, then you cannot be happy either. Life is sad and it is happy too. Think life is opposites: good and bad, love and hate, they are all offsetting opposites of one another. Think in our civilization that we are taught to go for the positive, be happy, think positive, life is what you make of it. The Buddhists I think accept that life is a struggle, so that when happy moments come, that you celebrate them that much more. We seem to want to avoid sadness, when sadness is called for, to the extent that the happy focus can make us unhappy when it becomes a pursuit in its own right and is not real any longer. What is that saying that there is no laughter without tears? Sometimes it is OK to be sad, and other times it is OK to be happy. This is life. Sometimes it is happy, at other times it is sad. it is just how it is.
Well it all goes back to psychology and religion.
If you feel like your living a happy life, or you keep giving yourself optimistic feedback, then you are likely to wake up every morning with a positive feeling.
This works vice versa as well.
I think thats where the concept of heaven and hell comes from in religion!!!
The question should be "What is true happiness? And where will the person can get it?"
The true happiness comes from inside. If you are searching outside and something makes you happy then that happiness would be temporary only. Like when you have a cup of coffee, you will get happiness till you get the aroma and taste of coffee. But, after sometime after finishing the coffee, your urge rises to have one more cup of coffee. If coffee is your source of happiness then my friend its only temporary.
Permanent happiness will give joy forever which comes from inside. So more and more are moving towards meditation and prayers.
Happiness is accepting yourself, doing what you enjoy, and being with other's that you enjoy being with - we're social animals, so being alone can sometimes cause us to be filled with negativity. If you don't like yourself, you can't truly be happy. Once you've accepted yourself, you can start thinking about what you like and what you're going to do with your life, and who you want to be with.

This really isn't philosophy, because you're asking our opinion.
According to Aristotle, Happiness could only be achieved if you are Virtuous.... If you try to do whats right, in the right case, right quantity, right person, right reason, right time and in the right way.
and by doing virtues, you will eventually achieve happiness :p
just saying
I think there's no such thing as happiness, as a state opposed to unhappiness. If you rely on duality, and build your concepts upon it, there's always some doubt, and doubt raises anxiety, suffering. These are the concepts most of us don't understand, so most of us remain pretty much unhappy for whole our lives, even when external circumstances works for us. We always think of happiness as a state that could be reached "only if" certain goals are achieved - we long for one thing, escape from another.
The very idea of pursuing happiness puts us in a bad position - instead of enjoying life we tend to struggle to change the world in a way that we think it would made us happy.
Yeah, my English sucks. ;-D Hope you get my idea.
Everybody defines happyness very diferently couse we all are different with diferent ideas and diferent perspectives of life, for a child happyness can be a new toy, for a mother the birth of her baby, for a businessman the riseing of his profits, everybody is happy for something they know that make them feel content and satisfied with themself's
