Project Management like sf.net but Private

leontius
I'm looking for a free project management website like sourceforge.net. The problem is that the project is not going to be open source, but it is a small project anyway so I cannot afford to pay someone to host the project. The site is only going to be a communication venue among developers.

Do you know any website like that? Or do you have any other alternatives? Can I set up my own private project management here in Frihost (because Frihost does not allow file hosting and this is similar to it)?

There are a couple of sites similar to Sourceforge like dotproject.net, openworkbench.org, google project hosting, but all require your project to be open source (except openworkbench which says either open source or free to use)

Check here if you can find something useful. If not request an admin here to load a project management software on your frih account... Not sure about the outcome though Confused

Hey just stumbled upon this

If the free account options aren't going to be enough, they're giving 30-day trials on the premium account types... if your project, as you says, being short, may be completed by 30 days time..

Also an admin will not put anything on your webspace. Thats why we give away free ftp accounts and cpanel with every hosting account (we're nice aren't we Smile ) .

You can just put your own software on your hosting. If you don't start providing space for other projects but your own you are allowed to do so.

Thanks for replying! Basecamp seems to be promising for me, but it says that free accounts do not get disk space for sharing files (I don't think it is wise to gamble on a 30-day trial). Do you know any other services that offer free and private CVS/SVN/other version control system access? (Or am I asking too much? It seems that only open source projects can get lots of freebies...)

I also know that I can use a distributed version control system over FTP. Is there any free file hosting that has FTP access do I can use it for that purpose? Or can I use Frihost server for that?

Hey - guess what? I found a perfect version control hosting at http://opensvn.csie.org ! It provides free SVN repository hosting and you can host private projects there (connect via HTTPS so that's secure enough).

DotProject should be good. It has task management and several other features which should drive your project competently with the help of others. The only issue might be the lack of SVN, but if you are using frihost for this, you probably weren't counting on having SVN support anyways (Sourceforge has reportedly extremely slow SVN servers by a software developing colleague of mine). It's also a private system, so nobody will know what's there except the developers.

I have checked DotProject and it looks great, but I found that another similar project, Trac, is more commonly used although it has not reach v1.0 yet (open source developers always like betas). I take that I can host them in frihost for private use. However, OpenSVN actually has Trac integrated in their server (they said it is experimental) so I think I will use that instead of fussing around in setting up my own.

During the little research I also found another nice service Assembla. The only bad things about it (for free accounts) are limited disk space (hey, 500MB is not that small), no SSL and no backup (except you get a paid account and have S3 storage). I am considering whether to use Assembla or OpenSVN.

There is one more called CVSDude which provides limited options free service... You can host your files there and provide CVS repository service...
