100% cpu spikes cause windows xp to freeze

Hi i hope someone out there can help because ive been having this problem for over 6 months and nothing i do will make it stop.

the problem is that when something has been downloading for a while either a torrent or evan when downloading from Internet Explorer the pc will either totaly freeze up, or will freeze for a couple of seconds then stops again for a couple of seconds over and over untill a total freeze.

In windows task manager theese freezes correspond with 100% cpu spikes, i have seen it say the culprit for the spikes in the task manger being many differant processes, svchost.exe, explorer.exe, usnsvc.exe, lsass.exe, and taskmgr.exe. But when the freezing starts the internet connection stops working alltogether, whatever i was downloading will have stoped, i wouldnt be able to load any websites in browsers or nothing but if i disable the internet connection in the connection settings the freezes stop straight away but to enable the use of internet a full reboot is needed

also if i move my mouse when it spikes and freezes when it comes out of the freeze the cursor will be where it should have moved to if the screen wasnt frozen. And when its frozen if i press the caps lock button the light doesn't go on and off.

my system specs:

XP Pro sp2
PC chips M848A Motherboard
1.8ghz AMD Athlon xp 2200+
256mb geforce fx 5200 (AGP)

Thankyou for reading my post i just hope someone out there has a solution for me as i have tried everything i can think of

Sounds like your PC is infected with malware.

Make sure all hidden files/folders are shown: find out how here

Use ComboFix: here

Then run HJT again.

Post both logs at

Name one CmbFxLog, the other HJTLog.

Reply when you've done this and i'll see what I can do.

Hi thanks for the reply! i have done what you asked (i think) i pasted the HJT log and where it says "your name" i guess thats where i put HJTLog ? i did a fresh posting for the combo fix log if that was correct?

thanks again

Thank you, its been done correctly.

I want to state from the very beginning that I should not be held responsible if anything goes wrong. I will of course try my best to help you with your problem. Make a backup and/or restore point so any changes I say make can be reversed, if needed.

    1) Do you have any games installed (for example battlefield2)?
    2) What program do you use to deal with .torrent files?
    3) Do you use any other browser other than IE? And if so, do the same problems occur here too?
    4) Is it your intention to have the Ask bar installed on your PC?
    5) Is system restore turned on?
    6) How much disk space do you have left?

ONE. Please use the Kaspersky WebScanner to scan your PC

Click "Kaspersky Online Scanner"

When prompted to install the ActiveX component from Kaspersky please click YES.

    * It will launch and download the latest definition files:
    * When this has finished click NEXT
    * Click on SCAN SETTINGS
    * Make sure the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases

    * Click OK
    Select My Computer
    * It'll then scan your PC (may take a while to complete).
    * When its finished it'll display some info.
o Click the SAVE AS TEXT button:
    * Copy the info and paste it at and call it KOVSLog.

TWO. Clear your downloads folder.
THREE. Clear your temp files.
FOUR. Clear your cache.
FIVE. Run disk cleanup and remove unimportant things.

Needed in your reply.

Answers to Q 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Confirmation that KOVSLog has been posted at
Confirmation that you have:
    *cleared your downloads folder.
    *cleared your temp files.
    *cleared your cache.
*removed unimportant data via disk cleanup.

Hi again, thanks for your help

1) i have a few games installed battlefield 2142, Battlefield Vietnam, NFS Carbon, NFS Most wanted, GTA Vice city, Worms 3D & Worms 4 Mayhem.

2) i am using BitComet but the problem persists using U-Torrent, Bit-Torrent, & Azureus.

3) i am using Mozilla Firefox and if downloading through firefox the problems persist

4) no i did not intentialy install the ask toolbar

5) yes my system restore is turned on

6) c:/ drive has 65gb left of a total 115gb

I have posted the "KOVSLog" it found 9 viruses

I have cleared all downloads folder, temp files, cache and did a disk cleanup with all options selected

Thanks again for your help with this problem

Rikki B
If you don't have windows xp service pack 3 already download it from the microsoft website. Problem should be fixed most likely.

If it isn't pop in your windows xp install cd and install to your drive but choose the option 'leave current file system alone'. that fixes it if sp3 install doesn't.

good luck.

4) no i did not intentialy install the ask toolbar

1. Battlefield, amongst other games, uses a program called PnkBstrA.exe. This program is usually pretty unstable and could possibly be the problem (a way to see whether this is the case is to uninstall the games and see whether the problem still persists, however, this may be more hassle than its worth)....
2. So its most programs that use a net connection. Its possible that the program mentioned above is active, or still in memory, when you are downloading and could affect the net connection. But this is just speculation.

4. Is the Ask Toolbar present in firefox/IE? If not can you see any options to use it?
7. Do you purposely install AlarmClock4Free?

-Make sure you have made a backup-

ONE. Update your PC (this includes all recommend windows updates, Ad-Aware 2007 program/definition updates, etc, etc).

TWO. If the ask toolbar isn't shown by default in your browser, and you can not choose it as a toolbar in IE or Firefox, then remove it from the add/remove programs section. If its not shown in the list then please state so in your next reply.

THREE. Go inside a folder. Click TOOLS, then FOLDER OPTIONS. Click the VIEW tab. Make sure SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS has a tick next to it. Make sure the next time options below this DO NOT have a tick next to them (hide known file type extensions and hide system files). Apply the new settings.

THREE. Restart your PC in safe mode.

FOUR. Find/Delte C:\QooBox\Quarantine\, then remove the files from the recycle bin. Restart in normal mode.

FIVE. Disconnect from the net. Close all windows. Stop all anti-virus/malware protection/programs. Run combofix. Copy/Paste new file in your personal pastebin. (call it CmbFxLog02)
(don't click on the window of combofix, it can cause it to crash). re-enable antivirus/malware protection. connection back to internet.

SIX. Run HJT. Upload new logfile to your personal pastebin. (call it HJTLog02)

Try and download something, see whether there is any difference.

Please note my next reply may not be straight away because at the moment i'm a little ill. it may be wise to open a thread at who are much much more capable than me and see whether you get a quicker reply from there.
I did everything you asked

4) No the Ask Toolbar isn't present in Firefox/ IE, and no there is no option in either IE or Firefox to use it

7) Yes I did install AlarmClock4Free myself, should I not have?

sorry to hear that mate, i read your blog
