darn, still cant figure it out, and i've searched. is there a specific tutorial for frihost members? i've done everything i could think of. the part that im skeptical about is this line in the .htaccess file

^is that right? or do i not need the domains part? i have 2 subdomains....

You have direct admin. It could be done much easier.
Log in on direct admin
Go to the file manager, find the folder you want to protect (if it's your main folder you need public_html)
Click on "Protect"
I think you'll make it from there
