I have been getting an error about Windows Live Messenger unable to retrieve the contact list since I reformatted the comp. does anyone haf this problem too?

That kind of information it's stored on WLM servers. Did you made any change to your msn-profile recently?
If you post a print screen of the error it would be easier to diagnose the problem
