Make Green, Blue, and Purple flames in the GIMP

william
Being a long time GIMP user, whenever I get the time, I've been able to create some nice images. So, now I need to make some flames for someone. I have created red flames before (flames that look like real fire) but I'm having trouble making the flames of some other colors. I'm pretty good at giving the flames their shape and design using IWarp. The problem for me is this; I'm not able to make a gradient that would actually make good looking green, blue, or purple flames. The gradients I made for these other colors just didn't give me the feel of flames.

So, I was wondering if any GIMP artists out there could help me out. I have a gradient made out for red flames that works well, but need some help with green, blue, and purple. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Very Happy

Thanks.

I'm not really an artists when it comes to physically manipulating stuff, but as a photographer I thought I might try helping you out. If your red flame works well, why not simply adjust the hue of it (White balance would be better, but I can't remember if the GIMP has that feature. If it does, use it.). This way you could create an identical flame in a variety of different colors, nondestructively. That would work, at least until you found the ideal color combinations.

Another thing you could try would to make the flames semi transparent and on black background. Then you could add a layer below your other layer to add the color beneath the flames. I'm not sure exactly how practical that would be, but it seems like a good idea to me.

Best of luck!

have u tried any available script-fu? I wanted similar effect I got it through a script-fu written by someone.
HOwerver I wud suggest you use photoshop which already has an in built flame effect.

@kuyman

I have attempted to adjust the hue, white balance, and saturation to get the color the way I want. However, although I have come close, I have not been successful. It's just that I'm not able to pull out the proper combination that appeals to me.

However, I like your idea about making it semi-transparent. I am going to try that.

Thanks for the help!

@akshar

I haven't used any script-fus. However, I am pretty good at getting the design just the way I want. It's just a matter of getting the color right. I prefer to use the GIMP over Photoshop (partially because I am primarily a Linux user), and I just don't want to pay for Photoshop when the GIMP is around.

I'm glad I could be of help, William. Best of luck with these flames, I'm really interested to see them when they're completed!
