Petition for Bush and Cheney to be arrested for treason....

LumberJack
An American town provided me with a pleasant surprise today. Brattleboro, VT council just passed and interesting petition and will place this question on their ballot coming up.

"Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities and shall it be the law of the Town of Brattleboro that the Brattleboro Police, pursuant to the above-mentioned indictments, arrest and detain George Bush and Richard Cheney in Brattleboro if they are not duly impeached, and prosecute or extradite them to other authorities that may reasonably contend to prosecute them?"

Now, you can probably guess that this is causing quite the frenzy among a lot of Americans. Ignoring their complaining, I must say it is refreshing to see some real Americans kicking about. Whether or not the petition passes, is irrelevant. This is symbolic, the town doesn't have the authority to arrest them anyways. The fact that they allowed this on their ballot, they honoured the democratic process that we hold so dear.

Unfortunately, I also read there are those who are making threats and calling them traitors. You will find that those people are the ones who are a threat to America. Attempting to silence the democratic values that make the US the envy of many other nations. Those values are there for a reason, to protect a minority and allow them to be heard in a peaceful manner. You may not like it and that is fine, but that is the beauty of it. It can be heard, yet ignored, peacefully... thoughts?

As a European (and growing up in Latin America), I was never overly impressed with the US democratic process as it pertains to senatorial and presidential elections, always assuming that money, standing, business interests, family and influence were usually more of a deciding factor than the votes in the elections that followed. But the one thing that the US has always practiced and understood (as most of us here in Europe have not), especially in a number of northeastern States, is the concept of direct, local democracy. Similar to a number of swiss "kantons", direct, popular democracy is the essence of this form of government and it is perhaps significant that this process cannot be ported to a larger scale.

Me being born just in the fall of the soviet union, i don't have a very high opinion of the democratic process in the US. i find it to bureaucratic. But i can find to points on this argument. On one side bush had no right to take control of another county. But on the other hand it was considered a "security" risk, which in my opinion some of those countries in Africa are more dangerous.

Thats my 2 cents,

Um, threats and name-calling? How is that an "attempt to silence the democratic values" ??

So of the list of charges, will the charges that W shot the Pentagon with a missile be on that list? Laughing Laughing Laughing

AFAIK stuff like 'you f**kers will die for insulting our commander in chimp' (I recall similar wording was being used by the angry morons) is indeed threatening and attempting to silence criticism, as well as an attack on democratic values.

Now, if you happen to like fascism, it's not a problem, but if you pretend you don't, then it surely is, and not a small one.

PS: God bless the cursing filter.
