United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said in a press meeting that United States remain ready and is willing to assist the Pakistanis and to partner with them to provide additional training, to conduct joint operations".
Pakistan has not officially asked any assistance in this regard, but it is noted that U.S. intelligence believes al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden is on the Pakistani side of the border with Afghanistan.
During last week visit, Fallon has hinted reporters that Pakistani officials were more willing to seek U.S. assistance. The top American commander in the region, Navy Adm. William J. Fallon, was in Pakistan earlier this week meeting with senior Pakistani officials, including the new army chief, Gen. Ashfaq Kayani.
