What ia allowed in the making up of a domain name

Which of the following symbols is allowed in making up a Domain name ?
Dashes -
Underscores _
Slashes /
Dots .
Also whch extensions are allowed in a Domain name ?
.com
.net
.ca etc.

Dashes are fine.
Underscores and Slashes aren't, unless they are part of a folder name and directory listing, e.g.
www.bobsblog.com/my_potato/
Dots aren't OK.

As for domain extensions, it depends on what kind you are going for and who you are. For example, you can't have a .com.au extension if you are not an Australian business with a ABN.
