No it isn't for Islam beliefs. In Indonesia the government only recognises these six religions: Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism.

Rather strange that Protestantism and Catholicism are listed when they are not religions as such but branches of Christianity, which is not recognised as a religion.

Islam in Indonesia is a rather strange blend of Middle Eastern Islam and local spiritualism so there is a wide range of mystical belief and practices throughout the country. Magic is very commonly believed in, as well as ghosts and magical creatures.

I don't get it. Are they trying to control what the people believe in (ie. religion). Wouldn't that equate to snatching religious freedom away? Confused

Although freedom of religion is guaranteed in the Indonesian constitution it is, in reality, a total joke.
Only muslims are free to practice their religion when and where they like in most parts of the country.

As you need community approval to build a place of worship and muslims are 90% of the population other religions have a major problem building places of worship.

In Bali, which is majority Hindu there is not a problem and some other areas where muslims are not a majority. Generaly muslims seem very intollerant of other Religious views in Indonesia but they run the government, the Department of Religion and the "Badan Koordinasi Pengawas Aliran Kepercayaan Masyarakat" so they generaly call the shots.

You can not even use your home for any organised religious function without permision.
