The Drupal CMS http://drupal.org has a built in search feature which relies only on database (it does not use MySQL full-text search index). You might want to study the source code. For webmail, you might as well search for some email client and server source code.

I've had this idea before, and trust me - it won't work

First of all you need to pay for it all somehow, and Google Adsense won't work on email because its a private thing.

As for the search engine, in order to sway people away from sites like Google, msn and Yahoo you need to have a damn good index Wink
