My first encounter with HM was in 2002 when a friend of mine recommended "Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World." It was then, and still is, the coolest book I've ever read. There are two stories told simultaneously which eventually merge into one - quite beautifully.
Since then, I've gone on to read as much of his work as I can - my personal favourites are "Norwegian Wood" and the short stories in "The Wind Up Bird Chronicles and other short stories." If you haven't read anything by him, I'd start there - and if you have, I'd love to hear your thoughts on his writing.
