Is he looking for a specific kind of *nix?
why not install linux on your own system to try it out? isn't that the best way to go around?
alternatively, i am not really sure about this one, perhaps you can try something like mingw under windows if you are a windows user.

you could also try cygwin which allows you to have unix utilities on a windows platform

Yes, cygwin is nice and takes just ten minutes to install - directly from internet.
You can easy choose what to include in your setup, so if you want only practice with the shell you can leave selected only basic things and keep a lean environment (about.. 50Mb.. if I remember).
But of course it also offers an extra large number of popular linux beautiful programs (sed.. mc.. octave gnuplot..) , so you can try them quickly, like them and finally think that linux is good for you!
