EGR-valve

Idoru
Hi there!

I'm least to say an amateur with car-mechanics, but we own an old Nissan Micra. It's a 1988. Been running like
a clock, cheap in insurance and fuel, untill recentlly. After asking around a bit and checking the hood we determined
that something is wrong in the pulse-air system, with the EGR-valve. The tube between the valve and the pump
was busted, so we changed it and hoped for the best. Unfortunatley that was hoping for to much... Sad

So, the car doesn't respond to the gas-pedal to more then 40km/h, and sometimes it just stops. We still think
it's something wrong with the valve, but would love some input. Anyone feel that they have anything to add?
All tips are of interest, since I, as I said, is an amateur. The insight I have is just from reading and people more
experienced then me, even if this post uses some terms suggesting otherwise.

Didn't draw much attention with this post. Smile
Anyhow, the problem is solved now. It turned out to be something wrong with
the chatalyst, and would have costed far to much for such an old car,
so today he drives to car-heaven.

A catalytic converter is not very difficult to replace.
You need to find a small local shop that can cut it out and weld a new one back in for $125.
A big chain repair shop will try to ake advantage of you and say that they only come with 8ft of Stainless Steel pipe pre attached then will try to charge you $800 or more.

Do you have emmission testing there?
If not, you can take a recipricating saw and cut it out yourself
then take it to a shop and have them install a "test pipe" for $15.
A shop can not remove and do away with a catalytic converter,
but if the vehicle comes in without one they are not liable.

They overheat sometimes and the insides melt and clog up the airflow.
This used to happen a lot when unleaded only vehicles started being made.
People would knock out the baffles in the filler necks
and use leaded gas because it was cheaper than unleaded.

Get a used one at a junk yard for $10.

Well, yup, we have emission-testing, and the annual check-up was just two weeks away. Actually, the mechanic
removed something so we weren't allowed to drive the car, just so we would be able to get it home. It sounded like
hell, and smelled similar aswell, but had more go then it have had in a long time. Anyhow, it ended up in the junkyard
and we got a new one.
