Software Engineering and other Computing jobs

HalfBloodPrince
Are software engineering jobs generally high paying? What other types of IT/Computing-related jobs are out there?

Thanks.
AftershockVibe
Off the top of my head, I'd say there were 3 main categories of software jobs:

1. Programming - Building programs (duh)
2. Testing - Checking for bugs in programmer's work. Also, automation work.
3. IT Support - Making sure that the business can do it's thing. Set up infrastructure, make backups, fix Windows.

There's also technical writers which do help files and documentation.

If you are out after money then going into consulting is the way to go - you'll have to work hard though. The other way is going into management, then you don't have to work hard, just go to lots of boring meetings.

I'm an IT student, basically, software jobs are bit confusing because of the many fields that IT scopes...

In addition to AftershockVibe's idea, you can be a;

4. System Analyst - one who analyze exisiting system, plans and modifies the program
5. DBA (DATABASE ADMinistrator) -self explanatory
6. Network Admin - self explanatory -(guess this has the biggest salary of them all)
