Problem with sound on Linux?

bostko
The problem is that I can't run to programs to play sound. For example when I'm listening music with VLC or XMMS and somebody is ringing on skype the ring sound is not playing' or I can't talk and listen music at the same time and I cant run to players to play music.
Does anybody have a solution for this problem Question

what distro are you using?

im no linux expert but i think there is several different platforms for sound in linux. It depends on which one you are using.

have a look at http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/
you might find more answers over there Wink

your alsa drivers are not installed or you don't have the proper codecs. I guess depending on what distro you have, it's best to go to that distro's forum and search for sound issues. It's actually a common problem, so you should be able to find something about it.

Sounds like you're using OSS rather than ALSA for whatever reason. AFAIK Skype can only use OSS, and XMMS is quite old and so probably does as well. Try using a more modern media player such as Totem or Exaile. HTH.
