I also recommend this site, to me it's the most informative and it's easy to find what you're looking for.
Although of course, I use all different kinds of sites to learn. I also learn by just picking up codes and playing around with them; it's easier for me. I'm self-taught

I agree, this is the best site on the net for learning pretty much any language.
www.w3chools.com is really a good resource to stat off with. A huge source of resource and content here. ANd on every subject you will find some great examples to help you understand. So you can go for this website to begin with.

i read the book known as COMPLETE REFERENCE HTML AND CSS ............. it has easily and beautifully described the css..............

Both very useful websites and I have learn html, CSS , php, Mysql , javascript and xml from the both of them. They are basic, but give you want you need to start off.
