how do i know without wasting a writable DVD that my dvd writer is working fi9 and it wud write this time around?

Also, make sure you write at a slow speed, (i.e. NOT the MAX Write Speed).

do speed check and compare them with speed check data from before... ^^
Actually the ability to write not only depend to the hardware, software to burn and memory availability should be counted too... (My pc crashed half way when burning dvd, and that's suck, solved after closing some programs)

may be you sud try out a rewritable DVD first

The only way it's to write a DVD-R/DVD+R... better if it's a DVD-RW...
There really is no way to tell. That's rather like asking 'how do I know my car is working without starting it?'
I don't know about where you live, but here in Canada, I pay about 50 cents per blank dvd, so I wouldn't be too concerned about wasting one. Also, every dvd writer gets a bad burn (coaster) from time to time, nothing to be concerned about really, although you may want to check the manufacturer's website for any firmware updates for the drive.
