adobe illustrator/photoshop effect

I've always wondered how this was done... and I thought maybe some of you would have a clue. Every know and then I see images styled this way. The images are made up of small little circles that make up the shadow of the picture. My question is... is this done circle by circle very tedious work, or is there some sort of shortcut to it?

Oh, there's definitely a shortcut way to do this. Check out the halftone filter in Photoshop (I can't remember exactly what menu it's under, but it's in there) and you'll see you can do it with circles. The scaling on this one is a little different, but it's definitely done by a machine and not by hand.

Another way to do it would be to make the Washington image a layer (the whole thing, not just the circles), find a cool brush like the circle one, and paint it on as a layer mask so the image would only be visible where you placed the dots.

There are so many ways to do this, actually, it's pretty crazy.

It's a tad off topic, but this list of free Photoshop plugins and filters was on the front page of Digg a few weeks ago and I believe there could have been a few filters to do this kind of work with.

Thanks for the interesting question, I hope I helped you out.
