PHP issue

Dark-Tech
Im kind of new to php so i don't know too much about it and i have a problem
i have a piece of code

'<img id="$1" onload="resize($1)" src="$1" alt="' . $user->lang['IMAGE'] . '" />'
i need it to be
'<img id="$1" onload="resize('$1')" src="$1" alt="' . $user->lang['IMAGE'] . '" />'
but if i try to put the apostrophes there then php causes an error

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '$', expecting ')' in /home/darktech/public_html/phpBB3/includes/bbcode.php on line 410

which i assume is becaues the apostrophe is ending the first apostrophe

how can i put the apostrophe in there without it screwing up the code
