Just a random question, does the new pokemon require WiFi connection through the DS?
It doesn't require per se, but it's nice.
If the person you want to battle isn't within local wireless range (100 ft. or so), you need wireless. And for the worldwide trading, yes. To play the game like previous generations, no.
