PS/2 keyboard not recognized when used with USB adaptor

I recently bought a new keyboard and managed to get it home before I discovered that my computer does not have PS/2 ports. I tried to use a PS/2 => USB adaptor, but it shows up as not recognized. After I little research I've come to the conclusion that since I'm using a passive adaptor (doesn't actually convert the signals, just switches up the pins), and my computer doesn't have native PS/2 support, the computer won't recognize the keyboard.

I was wondering if any of y'all knew of any drivers I could download to get this system to work? Thanks!

Running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2 on a Dell.

Just a shot in the dark here, but is USB keyboard support enabled in BIOS?
I've never been able to get a USB keyboard to work on my pc, USB everything else works just great even my mouse, but could never get the keyboard to go Sad
