Can cell phones affect your health?

nisibdv
When I am in my office, I take my cell phone out of my pocket and put it as far as I can frmo my over my desk. I am really
afraid of it. When a massage or phone is coming to it, the monitor of my computer makes a flashing and regular flickering. So if the
electromagnetic waves of my cell phone are so strong as to affect my monitor, what could they do to the cells of my body. I can
not be sure of it.

Dose anyone have a good reason that can convince myself of using my cell phone with more confidence? I am really afraid of it.

the electro magnetic radiation emitted from the cell phones are hazardous to health,

but then living life is a danger in itself

so what u gonna do

Well, a monitor is quite easily affected by electormagnetic waves, just try to bring a weak magnet near the screen and itll go all wired on ya, change the colors or shift the image, but the weak magnet doesnt do much harm to you, does it? But again, a cell phone aint so innocent, it usually has a 2-4 watt power output to send or recieve signals, meaning it does have some sort of power. But never fear, they make cell phones so that most of the radiation is emitted outside, from the antenna side of the phone, not into your head (its even advised in the manuals). Thats all I can say on this matter, Im waiting for my electromagnetics/general electric stuff course to start in a few months and that would bring me alot of valuable insight on the topic.

If you are afraid of electromagnetic waves then let me tell you this:
Any electronic equipment that emitts electromagnetic waves e.g a tv remote controller, a cell phone etc emit the waves in all directions and when they are received by the particular receiver e.g the infra red receiver on the tv, they are used to control some circuitry. But the waves don't vanish after they are received. In fact, all the waves from all the electronic equipments from around the world are spread over Earth and can be received anywhere.
When you hear the sound from the monitor and speakers it is because the waves are causing interference. So if you are afraid of waves then you should know that they surrond you everywhere you go. Very Happy
Harmful or not? I don't really know but cell phone are 'thought' to cause brain cancer.
CrimsonStrange
It's been my observation as a non-cellphone user that the most dangerous thing about using a cellphone is being so engrossed in your conversation that you're not paying attention to what ELSE you're doing at the same time... for example, driving Evil or Very Mad

That is another good point.
Other harmful effects could be:
1) Buying credit for your cell phone and wasting money. No money = no food, no shelter = death.
2) Trying to charge the battery of your cell phone and getting an electric shock and hence death.

In a study led by researchers from The Cleveland Clinic, men who used their cell phones the most had poorer sperm quality than those who used them the least.

The lowest average sperm counts seemed to be in men who had the most cell phone use (more than four hours a day); those who didn’t use cell phones seemed to have the highest. Although the sperm count appears to go down with increasing cell phone use, the difference in numbers wasn't significant.

The findings do not prove a link between cell phone use and semen quality, researcher Ashok Agarwal, PhD, tells WebMD.
so its definitely..... letting you not father a child...... so use desktop instead a lap or a palm top.

If the authors don't provide a mechanism for the interaction, the results are highly suspect. It's far more likely, in my opinion, that the study has been poorly case-controlled than that an actual effect was observed.

Light waves emitted by cell phones are low-energy, and don't happen to penetrate far into human tissue. Besides, the Earth has been aglow with radio waves for decades, now. My impression is that carefully controlled studies are finding no links between cell phone use and health effects, at least as a direct result with cell phone use.

Despite of the fact that the mobile phone industry is constantly downplaying the dangers, having radio wave emission close to one's body cannot be very healthy. I avoid carrying the phone on my body by placing it on the briefcase instead.

This is obviously an accident but a guy died recently in South Korea when the battery of his cell exploded in is pocket.

There is absolutely no evidence that mobile phones do long term damage to your health. They do emit electromagnetic radiation but as already mentioned they transmit the vast majority of it away from your head. Don't get me wrong - there is going to be some of the electromagnetic radiation absorbed by your body and it will cause some of your tissue to warm up etc. But no study anywhere has yet provided any conclusive proof that using a mobile phone will affect your health.

As for the sperm count one - why would using a mobile phone (ie having it near your head) affect your sperm count??? Last time I checked sperm was not produced or stored in that part of the body. Would it not be more sensible to assume that if a correlation existed (which even the report author apparently said was not conclusive) it was due to the fact that people had their mobiles in their trouser pocket? And so surely those that actually spoke on the phone the least (and therefore had the phone in their pocket for longer) would be affected by the radiation more? As mentioned it sounds to me more like the difference in the results were caused by other factors - frequent mobile phone users are more likely to be businessmen and so work in a city centre with a lot of pollution, and the less frequent mobile users maybe have a more sedate lifestyle in the outskirts or the countryside?

If you are that scared of your mobile phone then I would suggest a handsfree kit. But beware Bluetooth. The frequency band it operates in was chosen cos it is not useful for any other meaningful (ie longer range than ~ 10m) radio communication. You know why that is? Because that is the radio frequency that is absorbed by water and the air is full of water vapour... care to name anything else that is mostly made of water? That's right - we are!

If you think that your cell phone will "cancer" you... maybe you should throw it away. Why are you use it?
I have a friend who is scared about cell phones, he didn't use it... but he lost few job opportunities because of this and he consider the choice...
My mother is 60 years old and she is quite sick... one time she fall down in a park... if she didn't have the cell phone, I don't know when we would discover her...
Nobody force you to wear a cell phone... but don't you think that is risky not to have one?

And again, if all this waves are traveling around the globe, when all your neighbors, colleagues, friends have the cell phone... when are cell phones anywhere (at jobs, your parents, your friends), do you think that not YOU to have one it will be safer? Smile

I have to agree with Gagnar The Unruly, in that I don't believe there is any good evidence to show that cell-phones are dangerous to health.
I should also say, however, that I don't have one, never have and don't plan to. The reasons are nothing to do with health scares. I am a technology 'fan' and pretty science-literate but I am also a bit of an old fogey (46 yrs old with a tendency to wear cardigans).
I frequently find myself talking to people who are, at the same time, tapping keys on their mobile phone. I find it extremely rude and distracting. I also prefer to use communications technology and not be used by it. Anyone who I wish to be able to contact me can do so easily with my land-line or email. I do not wish to be 'on-call' to anyone who happens to get my mobile number by whatever means (whether than be work, friends or spammers) so I have resisted the temptation to get one.*

*My wife has one which is left turned-off normally and only activated when she is away at the weekends running our dogs in agility competitions (it is, I believe, very useful for her to have the means to call help if needed when out alone).

i agree.
get up in the morning and you could drop dead for no apparent reason

and you would have missed that wonderful steak with garlic butter, a nice glass of red wine, a grat espresso afterwards and the call of your beloved one.
what a shame Very Happy

It comes out that the safiest way to live. . . is not to live, yeah? Cool
Well... you can say that everything is harmful for you...

I have an LCD monitor so I don't have that problem, however my speakers make a clicking/buzzing noise right before I get a call.

Personally, I'm more concerned with my new microwave. I just don't feel right around it when its running and I can't explain why. Never had that feeling around my old one.

You shouldn't be too concerned.
Basically there are two types of radiation that need concern us here. Ionising and non-ionising.
Ionising radiation is dangerous (potentially) in that it knocks electrons about and causes chemical changes. This can result in damage to DNA which can cause cancers.
Non-ionising radiation is much less dangerous - it generally just 'warms things up'.
Microwaves are non-ionizing (as are radiowaves).
Gagnar The Unruly
The microwave could be doing a poor job of containing its own magnetic fields while running, which isn't bad for you but *might* make you feel funny, I think. Unless you wear a pacemaker, then watch out!

I heard that when the signal bar of a cell phone is low, the power of electromagnetic signals increase a lot to make proper connection, so it is preferable to use the cell phone only when there is good signal.
dac_nip
you know what, use google scholar and search for related research regarding this issue. from what i know, the radiation it emits affects you when you are calling, because it is too near you ears. also, when you are texting. it might cause rheumatism of the fingers..i can't guarantee these things so its better that you search it in journals.

I believe that if you use cell phones too much it can affect your health, especially if the phone is old… My mother uses one of these and after few minutes of talk the phone get that hot that she can hardly keep it in her hands. Id she has a headache after that. It’s obvious that it has some bad effect.

lol..how does that prove anything? I'm not saying they don't affect health but this is hardly what I would call evidence or proof. The phone gets hot? That would be a reason to get a new phone because it's obviously messed up if you can't even hold it after a few minutes. It proves nothing about health. A portable heater plugged into an extension cord gets extremely hot at the area it's plugged in, but does that mean it affects health? No. Her having a headache could be for any reason. Maybe if she wasn't burning her hand on a phone and holding it to her ear it would have different effects? I fail to see how your situation proves anything =/

The phone will heat up because of electricity passign through the small wires in the phone. If it heats up to the extent you can't hold it I would suspect there is a fault with the phone.

People get headaches for all sorts of reasons - I don't doubt that if you asked your mother to lean her ear against a radiator she would report a headache before too long also.

And yes, mobile phones do increase the transmitter power in areas of weak signal in order to achieve better reception so if you're really paranoid then make sure you only make/receive calls where you get a stronger signal.

If you're afraid of the effects of the cell phone, just get either a hands free headset. You could also opt for a bluetooth, but those send waves through the air as well, and I'm not sure how comfortable you'd be with that notion.

the reason that it coulkd affect your cells is the reason i don't have one. but i don't need one either, they can contact me through mail.

and i wouldn't like to buy new mobile cash (or however you call it) every month Razz

If a coworker smokes then they are damaging your health more so than using a mobile phone. If you have your office window open and their is a road outside then thats not too healthy either. If you have a stressful job then better give it up.

There are a lot of things that people do every day that are a lot more harmful to your health than using a mobile phone. Mobiles have been in widespread use for about a decade now and there is still no hard evidence that use of a mobile phone has led to development of a tumour or whatever. The reason I know this is that if a single case could be directly attributed to mobile phones then the media would remind us everyday.

Yes, mobile phones transmit radiation of a frequency that interacts with the human body, but we are subjected to considerable doses of radiation all the time from a lot of sources. The mains electricity wiring in your house releases radiation that interacts with your body.

People will always be scared of technology, and technology you can't see is even more terrifying, but this does not mean it is any more dangerous than using your telly remote control.

I think on two ways. The waves from a cell are diferent is magnitude form our dna and form other componente fo our bodys, so it cant affect that. But microwaves can warm and make several damagem to our brain, so we can admit that is possible to cell phones to cause damage to our brains.

Even so, the cell companys says that their cell are projected to emite the waver in the oposite way from our heads, so it will not damage our brains. I dont know if it reallu work, and if my thoughts are all corrects, what matter is that we are all vicious in celular phones, our need is bigger than our fear. So, why are we worried? Wink

CELL PHONES WILL NOT CAUSE CANCER !. A latest study conducted by Tokyo Women's Medical University, Tokyo, Japan concluded that regularly using a mobile did not significantly affect the likelihood of getting brain cancer.

But there are some effects of heat on your head. You can feel it very clearly when you use that old Nokia 2200 cell phone which will be a hot cake after use of 30 minutes or so. Modern phones significantly reduced this issues.

I remember in the papers it said that cell phones cannot affect your health. So it was a relief to some people. It does not affect your brain - is what the papers said.

Everything in life that's man-made usually affects your health.
Hasn't industrialisation caused smogs and stuff?

Well..life is full of risks, we just need to improve and learn how to save the future generations =)
Science has allowed us to understand and know more on how to save guard ourselves maybe like our car engines? Heard the new Euro Diesel Engines are not going to produce any or maybe no pollutants. Well, soon we wouldn't even need catalytic convertor Very Happy

The cell phone can cause deaf..If you put your cellphone beside your ear and the volume is maximume,so you have to low down the volume into medium..

Note:if your cell phone has 10 volume, you low down until 4 or 5.

Well I heard somewhere you can stay infertile because of the phone (like from laptop), so I think it's better to keep away from them or just tray to keep away Wink
