Santa Can't Say...

Drawingguy
I searched, but I don't think it's been mentioned before.

Apparantly, santas in Australia are being banned from saying 'hohoho,' and must now say 'hahaha' instead. Does anyone else see a problem with this?

that is an awfully strange law Confused

Seriously, what's wrong with people nowadays... We use to have perfectly fine Christmas and other holidays, but then suddenly the religion minorities started to be offended and we all had to please them by making our holidays worse... It's ridiculous and doesn't help at all, only makes the holidays for people that really care about them, bad...

And this "Ho Ho Ho" thing, another stupid change. I bet every kid in the world recognizes Santa from this phrase and now they are going to change it because not so long ago someone made a curse word from "Ho". Why do we have to care so much about not offending even a 0,00000001% of people :/
What's next? Santa won't be allowed to dress in red, because that color identifies with sex or Red Light District?

World got screwed up and it's irreparable...
doppleganger
well dude does it make a difference if santa says haha or hoho, as long as santa comes in the xmas with the gifts everyone is happy
Aless
Related story in the paper the other day...some school up north (England) is making their Santa Clauses wear GREEN suits instead of red, because apparently the red suit will remind kids too much of Coca-Cola! They want to make sure that Christmas is not about commercialism nor an endorsement of Coca-Cola.

I think they should dress in traditional Scandinavian dress!

Yes, of course it matters, it's not the same if they will keep changing things every year, it must stay the same, because it is our tradition, something that should stay in our minds exactly as it was for decades, unchanged... And now everyone is screwing this up... I want to remember Christmas as they were when I was a kid. I don't want to see Santa in 10 years that will be some robot, because it will be more fitting for the future times :/

omg...

This is just ridiculous censorship that messes with tradition. I have also heard that some people are trying to get thinner Santas to help fight obesity. I think this is all too much.
SpellcasterDX
It's ridiculous. It's not like 5-year-olds are gonna know that "Ho" means prostitute. It's a tradition that is not meant to be changed. Messing with it will just ruin it. And IMO "HaHaHa" sounds like an evil laugh, not a jolly laugh. Confused

Wow. What is this world coming to. If santa can no longer say "HoHoHo" cuz some screwed up ****************************** made it into a curse word, that means that about every product in the world with santa on it is now morally wrong and innacurate *sarcasm*. And havign to wear red because of Coca-Cola? I Blame those polar bears. Well, it shouldn't be green either. There are even more 'green things".

I do agree with the most of you here. They should not change it. Its just "hohohoho" and that was the way Santa was recognized and is recognize. It should not matter if its bad to other people coz it is Santa. I mean, what I am talking about is that the egg of this place to other any place is different in sizes or anything else but the main point is that it is an egg and the egg is known because of its unique characteristic with the other objects. So if I dont see Santa then he says "hahahaah" how could I know or recognize that it was santa. He was branded to say "hohohohoho". It may sound absurd or what but Santa is unique and is well known to say "hohohoho".

Cocoa Cola uses old Santa in their ads too much. Like you, I would like to see traditional Scandinavian suit.
We in the US just had the Thanksgiving holiday, so I am ready to start thinking Christmas. I certainly was not prepared on November 1st for all the Christmas stuff to start.
truespeed
The santa we know in the red costume is red because of coca cola,it was popularized by coca cola,it became a popular image of santa ,and now we all associate santa as being in a red costume because of it. So before the 1930's and coca cola's ad campaign , santa was traditionally regarded as a man who wore a green costume.
HalfBloodPrince
Concerned parents in the US want Santa to be depicted as a skinny man instead of the fat piece of lard we know him as today. Apparently, a fat two ton man jumping down people's chimneys at the dead of night to deliver presents sets a bad example for kids.

Personally, I don't care about what they 'do' to santa, because I don't and never did beleive in him. Sorry.
j_f_k
you've got to jokin man! I would have expected some rule in the UK or europe (where just about every human activity imaginable contravenes some EU regulation somewhere)

but in Australia?

this reminds me of a time a few years ago when I was posting on website on a regular basis. One day I made a post about something (can't remember what its not important) anyway the post had the word 'shoe' in it. I kept getting back the post wouldn't go because it contained one or more swearwords - after much experimentation discovered that it didn't allow swear words embedded within words (for example, talking about Matushita electronics was a big no no) and arising from this feature, 'shoe' was a problem because it contained the word 'hoe' which, as far as I know is a gardening implement it also apparently a rude way of referring to a female person.

In the end I could get around this simply by typing SHOE in capitals - this defeated the checking - incidentally allowing you to swear like a trooper without it being blocked, moderated or anything.

the moral to the story is use off the shelf software to write news group software don't try and DIY it aint as simple as it looks (sorry i'm veering off topic here - i;ll stop now)

I saw this and had quite a laugh. How can people be soo stupid? Laughing Laughing
eggg
Shrug. I'm sure someone would complain if I were to actually come out and call Santa Claus by his proper name, Odin. I say let the culture contort as it pleases.
ocalhoun
^Santa Claus = Odin?
But I had never thought of Odin as fat... Or particularly inclined to give children presents for that matter... I'll ask a guy I know who is Odinist (Yes, I know someone who worships Odin)

That's right, I heard about that on the radio; a health association has determined that Santa being obese is a bad example for children...
What kind of screwed-up kid looks to Santa Claus as a role model?

As for the ho-ho-ho, I commend the Santas there for rebelling and saying it anyway. Civil disobedience at its best! (What can they do about it anyway? "Sorry kids, no Santa this year, we arrested him for refusing to stop saying ho-ho-ho...")
BPrice
absolute load of rubish.
what women in her right mind would walk past a santa and think he is calling her a ho.

and how is ho ho ho going to frighten children when santas have been saying it for many many years

I supose next they will try to get all the classic christmas movies and cartoons edited so ho ho ho is taken out of them.

the most rediculas law ive ever heard of.

It's interesting... but dose it need to make a law for that?..... Actually, I didn't read the news linked. but I think it's just for personality..
charisco
Personally I think it is all pretty sad. But in today's times, what do we expect? I mean a couple of decades ago, noone would have ever thought some of the things that have happened in recent years would have ever happened.

Companies being sued for selling HOT coffee. I don't drink coffee, but, I know it is supposed to be hot. This in my opinion is just another way for people to make things go how they want.
Peterssidan
Is this true? Santa isn't a real man and if I want santa to say hell hell hell instead of ho ho ho or ha ha ha I can't see the problem? The government doesn't own him! I don't care much about santa but care about the right to say what I want. And Santa must have the rights to say what he wants!
lethaltriad
lol I can't believe this is real, people need to lighten up.. they taking this waaay too seriously now. What next? Ban santa completely because he encourages people to break into people's house through the chimney at nights lol

Ho Ho Ho !!

A mall Santa in South Carolina has told by management NOT "Ho, Ho, Ho!" but rather "Ha, Ha, Ha!". Management stated "Ho, Ho, Ho! scares the kids and has nothing to do with call girls". Get real Grinch!
Nameless
Ha ha ha!

That was me laughing as my old foe Human Stupidity now allies with me to fight against the greater annoyance of Christmas.

Yea "Ho, Ho, Ho!" is more frightening than "Ha, Ha, Ha!" Rolling Eyes
Like I said before, Ha Ha Ha sounds like an evil laugh, plus it would just ruin the tradition that was established long ago.
Vrythramax
The whole thing seems rather bizzare to me, I'm pretty sure the kids are not frightened by them either saying "ho ho ho" or "ha ha ha". If I were them I'd be more frightened of having to sit on a strange man's lap and ask thim if you have been naughty or nice....then go on to tell them that he has a list with there name on it and he knows where they live....AND he's going to sneak into thier house some night soon. Smile
ninjakannon
Okay, so they're worried about the other meaning of the word 'ho'. They're so worried that they basically legislate against it. Right, so... Why are they worried? What's wrong with 'ho' being a homonym of 'ho'? Dare I point out that there are quite a few homonyms in our language. Furthermore, the majority of people see the 'ho ho ho' in context and think nothing of the ruder meaning of the word. And those that do, what's wrong with that? I would guess that around 99% of young children don't know any meaning of 'ho ho ho' other than the sound some people make when they laugh.

I'd like to point out that, especially online, 'ha ha ha' is taken to mean 'laughing at' or 'laughing about', not 'laughing merrily', which is the connotation of 'ho ho ho'.

So... I don't see the problem. Oh, I lie! I do see it: the problem is an over-sensitivity to political correctness, amongst other things.

*Ninjakannon makes an exasperated noise*

Santa can't say anything cas' he's from new newzleand... hahaha... i can't belive that people are just there to scare him. I don't like santa.. he never got me presents.. hahaha... hhhahahha.. sucks.. but true....
Urban
It's simply idiot, maybe ho mean prostitute but the kids would have never know about the true meaning of this word if some stupid adults wouldn't have told them about it?

Oh, you're not allowed to call them 'hoes' any more. Now they're 'General purpose soil manipulation hand tools', or 'rakish like things'.

[quote=gerly20"] I don't believe in Santa Claus so it don't bother me.

I couldnt care less because I dont celebrate X-mas but anyway the trith is probably 80% of anything you think is tradition or original is contorted out of some historic event. Thats hyow humans work, you cannot imagine something if you were never given the notion of it, the same way a person cannot imagine a color that he never saw.
carlospro7
that is the strangest law/policy/etc I have heard of before, but I don't see a problem with saying haha over hoho or the other way around.

Maybe they changed it to Garden Haes? I dunno lol Razz

Anyway I think that's messed up. No one would normally think of santa's hohoho's as hoe hoe hoe's. That ban or whatever it was just makes people think that way. Same thing for the green santa as coca-cola. I think CHANGING his color to green because of that will make everyone think coca-cola when they see any santa now and more likely if he's green than red.
KronikSindrome
censorship....

no one wants to be liable for offending anyone these days.

I think it's pathetic, I don't need other people to protect
my feelings nor do I like my right to offend others being taken away.

which is part of the reason I don't post here more often....

this place is censored all to hell.....

I preffer places where I am free to be pissed off
and to piss off others. We really aren't doing ourselves
any justice by sheltering everyone's feelings....

if your feelings never get hurt then you never have
the oportunity to learn how to heal them (on your own).
it's stifeling the growth proccess. sad....

I understand the need from a legal perspective....
but it's still sad.

ho ho ho! and feck censorship Twisted Evil

Haha, did anyone here actually bother reading the article?

Santas are not being banned from saying "ho, ho, ho" in Australia. This is the first I've heard of it, and reading the article it just sounds like one company somewhere made a weird decision. It was never any form of law or policy, or even put forward to any parliament of Australia. I don't know where people have made the jump to apply that to a whole country Wink.

=> Jess

edit: reading the full article, it doesn't even sound like that company was banning their Santas' from saying anything, "hahaha" just happened to be a phrase in a new greeting they were introducing.

Good old fox sensationalising a story out of nothing...
crimson_aria
omg that is just too funny. XD .. and stupid if it's ever real >.<

30+ people who have posted on this bored, but only one has actually read the article. (Hehe, go jess!)
If you had of read the article, you would of found out it was just one Santa company, not the whole of Australia.
It makes you wonder how many people just guess what a piece of writing is about by the title.
So the moral of the story here is to make sure the title of your blog/post/thread is the basic point that you're trying to make, whatever you write after that can be complete gibberish. Wink

Some of these posts, including mine (hehe, I had to check Razz), could talk either about the entire country or simply the company in general - so it's hard to tell whether they read it or not.

But I would suspect not, I trusted the thread starter was speaking the truth and replied with that in mind. But you're right, repliers should have read it.

I'd like to make another point, thread related. It is solely the legislation or published fears from governments or businesses that fuels any problem anyone might have with things such as this. I could expand on that, but I feel there is no need.
