ANGRA
I like j-pop & j-rock

My favorit artist is L`Arc~en~Ciel Cool
SeoJi
It's allright. My favorite band are the Pillows. I can't understand a lich of japanese, though I do agree that the overall sound is just great and can even sound a bit more creative then american music. Though I have met a few people who just like the music becaue Ayumi or Utada are hot. This true, but not a reason to like a culture in my opinion. Not a credible one anyway.
Monkeydog
You don't really have to know the lyrics to like the music =/
I like J-pop and J-rock tho I still know very little(as I know of american music)

Was this directed toward me? If so..

I never said you have to know the lyrics (though that would help), I said you shouldn't like the music because the artist looks pretty. That kind of like saying I ate a piece of candy, it taste really bad but the stripes on it are cool. So I'll keep stuffing my face. w...t...f?

Embarassed ...sorry if it wasn't....

kazoe
i prefer j-rock, im a sucker for noisy music :p x-japan is ok, but dir en gray is the best for me, one thing i love about their music is that they're experimental, and most bands were not boxed in a certain genre of music, or rock in particular.

Exclamation hamasaki ayumi is a plagiarism king!!
The plagiarism of hamasaki's music is considerably awful.
The mass media of Japan (television, radio, and newspaper, etc.) is not reported the topic with a Japanese web again as for a considerable topic at all because of the pressure of hamasaki's production though it becomes contrarily.

Plagiarism lyrics list

The appearance contract of about ten company commercial became a cancellation because of the exposure of the plagiarism, and it became only the commercial contract of Panasonic now

The report of the plagiarism is restricted by the pressure of production though hamasaki is sure to be banished from public entertainments. Japanese media are closing.
The TV station that had existed in Osaka in Japan last December reported hamasaki's plagiarism.
Moreover, it is possible to have reported it even by three weekly magazine magazines.
However, there is still a press restriction.
Everybody will not hear hamasaki's music either. It is necessary to catch hamasaki by critical eyes.
hiroki-star
I love Japanese music. Ayumi Hamasaki is the best singer to come from Japan.

Her new album will be amazing, as "Heaven" is a great hit.

I used to really like "heavier" J-ROCK such as Moi dix Mois, or DIR EN GREY.

but it seemed to be popular to like them , and alot of thier style changed.
prongs_386
B'z is good, also is aiko. Good guitar work.

Japanese musicians are innovative. They do everything we do , just in a werid way. I noticed that they like to experiment with sounds and effects. I listened to both but thought western music are more refined.

X-JAPAN and l'ARC EN CIEL are the most famous japanes bands I think.Tell me if I'm wrong, I've tried to hear to some of their albums and videos, I found the melodies good, they could certainly sell a lot in north america, if they did something in english. But quite honestly, they are not outstanding, there are a lot of bands that do the same kind of music.
moreover, the lyrics are completely impossible to understans as far as I speak no jamanese Wink but I find it cool, it gets well along the melodies.

I never tried before.Hope can post some link to download.

I am not quite sure if Japanesse music is the best and most creative. But there are a few bands that I love from Japan. Shonen Knife, Pizzicato Five, Spaghetti Vabune, Cibo Matto (half americans) and Ruychi Sakamoto Razz

Cheers!!!! Cool

i like jap music because they're adventurous in music, they're dont stick into just one genre, just like other western bands do.

Fixed for you. Very Happy

Has anyone heard of Angela? They (it's a duo) did the opening and end themes to the anime Stellvia and Fafner. They're JPop, but they've got a fairly unique sound, and the lead singer has one of the best vocal ranges I've heard in a Jpop group. My problem with many JPop bands is the same problem I have with US pop acts: they all start to sound alike.

Also, Malice Mizer and/or Gackt are HOT girlies. Very Happy

Oh, and the Beat Crusaders kick all sorts of ass.

Scanned quickly through this thread and I dont think anybody mentioned Japan-A-Radio?

http://www.japanaradio.com/

Just to explain its a free Internet radio station playing only Japanese music.

I love sitting at work listening to this. You get to know new (or old) artist that you would never have discovered.

I've heard quite a lot of J-Pop and J-Rock, and I don't have any particular taste to it. Not bad, just not my favourite. Cool

The J-music really rocks! Especially the theme songs composed by Nobuo Uematsu and theme songs from anime. Laughing

She's definitively my favorite japanese singer ! She's very good, her voice is just so sweet and powerful at the same time *-* My favorites for now are : So much love for you, Time to say goodbye, I Shiteru, The power of smile, Watashi no Taiyou (this one is very very good!!!) and her last single ... Ai no Melody !

I like Utada Hikaru!

X Japan were so wonderful... . Everyone should listen to Art Of Life atleast once fully.

I like what I've heard of Japanese music but haven't looked too much into it. I really like the final fantasy music.

I'm a big fan of Japanese music; I shifted from American music, and now my collection is almost 97% Japanese. Some of the music they're playing/releasing there is a lot better than the stuff they expect people my age to listen to (heh, I'm a teenager Rolling Eyes).

But lately, I've taken a liking to songs by artists who write, play, and sing their own music. :3

I like the 5.6.7.8's and Meiko Kaji (even though I don't understand a word of Japanese) Very Happy

I'm a pretty big fan of Japanese music as well. I started out listening to X-Japan but have since got into the more gothic side of the scene, with bands like Malice Mizer (my favourite), Moi Dix Mois, Dir en Grey and Eve of Destiny.

yup yup...
before I started to watch anime it was all junk to me, but now I have tons of Jmusic. Most songs aren't beautiful at first but if you hear it again and again you just start to like it.

Also the feeling you got with the anime will get to you through the music
Forgotten Legends
I love all kinds of japanese music, espically the music from D.N.Angel it's so pretty. I also love L'Arc~En~Ciel as well they're my favorite Japanese band!
sangook
i think japanese artists are really psychotic.
they're very creative in that way.
if u've watched battle royal or other japanese movies, u're pretty sure it's very unique.
so is the music.
i like hiphop and japan is one of the countries like German who got influenced very quickly. For example, i heard there's a lot of Wu Tang Clan fans in Japan and it's also a good business there.
anyways, i like M-flo. they represent japanese hiphop culture and they have good instrumental but the language is pretty funny.
i also like other genre. Hamasaki ayumi has some aggressive instrumental and i've read english translation of her lyric. it's very different.
Also, X Japan is pretty good lyrically. If u read the translation of "Endless Rain", u'll see how different it is from other lyrics in US.

One thing that's sure, their english sucks though. lol

Certain bands' English sure sucks hehe yeah:) . But does that really matter? I can certainly appreciate Japanese, even if i don't understand it, you can often catch the overal feel of the song even without the lyrics being English.
And when they do sing English it's with a funny accent that i also like Laughing
.

Another Japanese (i think?) band:

Boris!

Listen to 'Naky Kyoku' for a great piece of progressive music Smile

Jpop is wonderfull! Especially BoA. Gosch! Love her so mutch!

Her song Dakashimeru and Everlasting is supreme!

Very Happy Very Happy

I only listen to stuff I find pleasing when watching anime. Flow, Utada, FictionJunction YUUKA, Sambomaster, Akeboshi, Gackt, Do As Infinity, Asian Kung-Fu Generation and a lot more random artists.

Yes, I love Japanese music too!
My favourite singer is Ayumi Hamasaki. I listen to her songs about 2 years and now I'm one of her biggest Fans Very Happy
I love her lyrics and she has such a wonderful way to write lyrics. She shows her feelings in it and isn't so stupid like the american singers who sing only about big boobs or someone like that.
Another singer I like is koda kumi (you can see her on my avatar lol).
She will become the next Jpop Queen after Ayumi.
Her style is very naughty, but she sells her very well and not too bitchy.
Her songs are very catchy and her ballads very great too.

omg excuse my bad english if it is Razz

YES, oh yes, Malice mizer's Beast of blood is my all time favorite song! but my fav. band is Moi Dix Mois.. latest albulm not so great because its a little too metal for my taste

anyone know the japanese group in the opening of the anime "Bleach"? Something about she is a shooting staaaar... tonight tonight?

* Satanicpornocultshop, great band their best album I know is "Ugh Yoing".
* Afrirampo - Kore Ga Mayaku Da. Interesting stuff, not for everybody but plenty energy and some originality, curious to listen their next move. I'll perhaps go to a show where they'll play.
* Acid Mothers Temple, interesting band but they make too many albums and most has some holes beside great stuff. The one I prefer is "Univers Zen Ou De Zro A Zro" with mostly only great stuff.
* Guitar Wolf - Loverock: Well not bad but from the few I listen, despite a cool style they of originality for me.
* Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld, just know one album, a bit a same problem than Acid Mothers Temple, cool stuff beside stuff too difficult to listen.
* Yuko Nexus 6, very close to experimental. As most experimental stuff, it mix great stuff and some stuff mostly impossible to catch/enjoy appart for few mad people. Wink
* Haino Keiji and Yoshida Tatsuya - New Rap I don't know them appart that they are famous! Interesting album but not easy music, highly based on freeand certainly experimental.
* Keiji Haino, again I don't know well, just one album, interesting electro music, look a bit like ambiant for me. Good stuff but not really my cup of tea.
* Cornelius - Fantasma, good one I haven't listen since a very long time. If I remember well too much pop and clean for me but inventive.
* DJ Krush, well very well know, I haven't listen since a long time, I don't remind to have enjoy.
* Mono : I don't like, I feel they copy too much and that's not my favorite style of music.
* Ruins, great band, I have ton of albums from them, but I take time to listen only a few. Some are great like "Stonehenge " and "Vrresto".
* Hoahio, very interesting, my current 'made in japan' favorite with Satanicpornocultshop and Ruins. From Hoahio I have 2 albums, "Happy Mail" and "Ohayo! Hoahio!" their first interenational release. Sometimes a bit experimental but not difficult to listen, sometimes more experimental and less easy but very diversified and always interesting.
* To conclude this small list, Merzbow is on my list of stuff that are urgent to listen.

I don't know many japenese bands, but I'm a big fan of

Heh, funny how Japanese music is being related to anime most of the time. Cant blame ourselves though, I myself became curious with j-music ever the first time i ever hear an OST of my very first loved anime. I think nobody knows this show, its called Eto Rangers and its extinct, being made i think in around. The ending and opening song is beautiful and it started me liking OSTs. Then when Inuyasha came. I think its in 2000. That one had me really starting to hunt not just anime OSTs but japanese music as well. My first band is Do as Infinity. They did not disappoint me. And since then, I do not stop hunting for them.
Teishi
I like lots of Japanese music, but am not as much involved anymore (for some silly reason, but my musical tastes go in cycles so...). Still, Ayu, Malice Mizer, Gackt, Luna Sea, Every Little Thing and Do As Infinity will always have a place in my heart ^_^

As a side-note, I think it's funny how much Japanese pop/dance music sounds like the stuff you find in the Eurovision Song Contest... O.o
Shewolf
The little bit of Japaneese music I have heard was not bad at all. But that was not Jpop, just some movie soundtracks. The Princess Mononoke Theme is truly beautiful. Though I can't understand a word of what they are singing Confused
xeszline
I love Japanese songs!

They have their own melodies that's kinda specific.. You know what I mean, right?
You just listen to the melodies.. to the drums.. rhythm.. You just know it's likely to be Japanese songs and then you're right!

I like the unusual melodies that Japanese songs have. I don't really understand the lyrics. But I do want to, I'll search it in the http://www.animelyrics.com
They also have non-anime song lyrics.
sugarbox
some Japanese songs i can listen <Larc en ciel>

Hehe, you might notice than in many of their songs, they incude english lines randomly. This is because for the pop in japan, English is very cool to put into the songs Razz its actually conventional Smile
in all of our songs we should include Japanese Lines Razz
"Te o nobashite!!" pronounced "TA OH NO BASH EETAY" means "Hold your hands up high" Smile. Aged 15, and yes, i know quite a bit of japanese (H). What can i say, Nintendo is based in Japan after all, might as well get used to the music now Razz

2 of my favorite jazz musicians are hiromi and storm takashi [who is like... 18 or 19 yrs old], both are pianists... and of course the jazz group hiroshima. my all around favorite japanese artists are nujabes and minmi [nujabes produced the opening track for samurai champloo and minmi sings the closing track. if u have limewire [or any p2p] u can check them out. if u listen o jazz u HAVE 2 check out hiromi... she is sick with it!

The Pillows!!! They're playing in Seattle on Saturday and it's going to be incredibly awesome. Also, I've listened to some of the classical music and music from plays and rock operas and it's kind of weird because I don't speak the language so I have no idea what's going on but I still find the melodies alluring.

F00k, I'm feeling jealous. The Pillows is one of the first j-bands I've ever known and loved. Darn it...

I understand a little Japanese and well, so what if their English sucks (as well as other nations who are not heavy english users) We also suck at speaking Nihongo.

@zibe:

I'm so going to find that band if it combines the both genre I love. Very Happy

I love them, I just like it, what should I say, I feel comfort when listen to it.

It's probably because I grew up watching anime that I am into japanese music.

Still, there are japanese songs (that aren't related to any anime series), which I really enjoy and I think Japanese music is unique and enjoyable to hear... even if I don't understand. LOL
twilightmoon
nope
mheltz09
Wink they are unique and have originality:>
fuzzkaizer
of course i like japanese music - there are some fantastic traditional instruments, one is like a surfboard with strings on it, and it's played like sort of a harp...
i also like that ELEKI sound - sort of japanese surf-sound, which is for the most pieces, instrumental, so there's no problem with the lyrics... there's Yuzo Kayama
and there's also Takeshi Terauchi
quite interesting 60ies guitar stuff! besides there are many unique contemporary surfbands like the surfcoasters
also instrumentals, no lyrics... you get imediately what it's about!
_AVG_
I don't know much about traditional Japanese music but I must say, some of the pop songs (especially those I have heard in animes Smile ) are quite nice. Otherwise I quite like the Japanese scale as well ( I'm not sure whether it has a special name or not). When played on the harp or koto it sounds the best.

I hear Japanese music in the TV shows (anime and tokusatsu programs) that I watch. J-Pop also gets some airtime on our local music channel here, so those songs from the videos that get played, I hear as well. Smile
memno
I have 2 various discs made from my file-sharing program heyday (not to mention)
and the discs are full of ear-peeling J-Pop that annoy, yet somehow enthrall me.
I have no names anymore, but one I remember is Reiko.

Overall, it's split 50/50 with western influences and their own take on hooks and
star or "idol" power,, I can't describe it any other way right now..Very annoying to
those not so culturally diverse. I can see how the same country can spawn a sound
so defiant as Noise.
