Internet Pet Peeves

Afaceinthematrix
What are some of you pet peeves on the internet?

Some of mine are:

Websites with so many pop-ups that it freezes your computer
Pornographic pop-ups (if someone wants to look at that, they can go to the websites)
Forum emotions, or smilies as some people call them (especially the ones that move - this is my biggest internet pet peeve!)

What are some of your internet pet peeves?

I hate bots!!!! If you are a webmaster then you know what I mean. Bots suck and those who create the mean bots should be shot, tared and feathered, and then shot again.

I can't stand having to delete that crap from my forums, and I cannot even imagine what it's like to keep things clean here on the frihost forums.

Pet peeve: Forum Bots

yea pop ups and ads are definatly up their, but people who relate everything back to religion and then singlehandedly reply to every single message making the topic twice as long drive me crazy Razz

My #1 all-time pet peeve on the internet is websites with music. I can't stand websites with any type of sound at all. I listen to music on my computer while I'm online, and the last thing I need is to be subjected to blaring noise from some lame wesite. To make it worse, many of these sites don't have a button to disable the music.

Yeah! I like to be able to disable the noise. I don't mind the sites with noise if you can disable the noise. Sometimes flash games will have sound effects and such so that's all right. Have you ever heard those annoying advertisements that talk to you? Those are the worse! Ads re supposed to sell, and those do just the opposite for me.

Oh god. The worst thing ever is probably that chick that says, "Congratulations! You've won a free iPod!" Shoot me. There's a guy voice too, now, and sometimes it'll be "Congratulations! You've won a free iPhone!" Hate those like nothing else. >:O
apple
definitely the sound mentioned above....why do people think we wanna hear music looping for the duration of our visit?! ARGH!
Liu
People who follow internet fads, even when they are just kidding.

For example, saying "zomg".
DejaaVu
I hate it when you are looking for something on Google, then it redirects you to a site that has little to nothing to do with what you are looking for.

Those shock sites also annoy me as do the unnecessary pornographic pop-ups. I also dislike people who have high egos on the internet to make their selves look tougher
Insanity
Extremely poorly designed websites tick me off for some reason. There are even some businesses that are professional in real life but their websites look like crap and it's annoying. How hard can it be to make a non-crappy site? A 13 year old kid could probably do it.
otiscom
Popups and popunders, sites that keep you there when you hit the back button.

The porn and gambling sites that come from nowhere and then plaster your screen with a miriad of separate windows so fast you can't shut them down.

The list is endless. I have now stated using Maxthon browser and the add and popup blocker is wonderfull.

Some internet cultures, web developers, forum leaders or chat room people that declare that they have been on the internet from the time of it's birth and therefore know everything and dictate the way it should be.

Words like "this what this is for", or "it should be this way", when in fact they are only seeing one side of the equation. For example, even the so called savy lanquage and format that has developed on the internet, like in chat rooms for instance, the lol, brb, wb, ty, etc that is suppose to be considered polite and normal when in fact it is a lazy way of communication, very outdated and a lame to write really.

Maybe, I am over sceptical about communication but some so called standards are way too low. It's not that it is rude or anything, just really pieves me since it is common nature to want to copy something and I don't want to go that way.

I'm not perfect, I misspell, my sentence structure is sometimes all wrong, I really need to learn to write better and get my thoughts down in proper order and be more clear but despite all that, I can say I don't want to give in to the " pressure" to conform to the so called "internet pro-to-call form of expression" that the so called experts demonstrate online and then dictate to others that their way is the way it should be then turn around to state the internet is a place to freely express.

Open for debate i suppose!

pple hoo tk lyke th15 k lol.

I don't even have to be using the internet. I can just glance over at my younger brother typing like that and be hit with irritation. Basic grammar / spelling is a good thing, okay?

But on the subject of pop ups, they're your own fault really. It's not like it's hard to switch to a browser with popup blocking. (And the same is true for 95% of ads.)
missdixy
Websites with music, also.
Unless it's a myspace or something, because that's usually expected and it's usually easy to pause it....but websites with background music ughhhh
Daisie
I second the web site with music on, drive me bonker!
You are happily surfing in peace when suddently Celine Dion is screaming in your ears EWW!

And like Nameless said,
Quote:
pple hoo tk lyke th15 k lol.
"cuz it's sumfing kwel". No it's not, no one like to spend 15 mn trying to deciphere what you have to say. (especially when english is not your first language)

And pop up but thanksfully with firefox, I dont have that many.
PatTheGreat42
My internet pet peeve is emoticons. I figure people on the internet should be literary enough to be able to express emotion without the egregious use of punctuation marks, arranged in a strange and ineffective simulation of human facial expressions.

And to all those that disagree, :^P
saratdear
Mine has to be the sites that force you to stay on the site. I mean, there are some which do things like a small popup saying - "Wait! A live agent would like blahblahblah. Click cancel to stay on the current page." If I want to stay, I will. I don't really want anyone's help.

Others would be those annoying, flashing banner ads. I don't want to dress up any Zwinky and I definitely don't want smilies which talk. Rolling Eyes And I can't count the number of times to be incredibly lucky and be the 999,999 visitor.

I disagree with others on their opinion on emoticons. Perhaps...perhaps you sometimes can't express your emotions with text alone? But I do absolutely hate posts like - "OMG! i made 5 posts didn't get accepted!!!!! (insert random number of smilies)". That is just an example. Thankfully, I don't see posts like that here on Frihost.

Hmm... my internet pet peeve has more to do with communities than pop ups. As it is I'm lucky that I don't come across too many in my daily surfs.

One of my earliest pet peeve is that a lot of things are very american oriented. A lot of contests, services and such are mostly geared towards and for americans.

There was also the time where practically everyone on the internet is from america that if you do not specify otherwise, people just assume you're american. I end up doing that too unfortunately because half the time they are, and I don't really care where they come from anyway.

And in some communities, a lot of references are also american. Like, american burger king jokes or ads. It gets annoying when I read threads and I find that I don't quite understand what's being talked about, until i find out that it's in reference to something american.

I wish the internet was a lot more global then, well, american.

Pet peeve: Forum Bots

Yup, I couldn't agree more with you.
I have a website for my sudoku application, and there I also run a phpBB forum that for a while ago was completely flooded with spam.

It all stopped after I install the phpBB spam filters Smile

That too is so typical.
I totally agree Smile
Those talking smiley ads that starts to talk loudly when you enter the site, is by my opinion some of the worst, and most annoying.

Ditto.

Bad grammar and spelling irritates me to no end. It doesn't help any that the people on the news have started using slang, bad grammar and mispronunciations in a misguided attempt to "connect" with the "younger generation". News people are still dorks in suits, and they aren't going to win over the youth market with stilted, awkward use of street talk. Maybe they should try something really radical, and just tell the truth.
J-Evil
- PEOPLE THAT TYPE IN ALL CAPS!

- People that use hard-to-read colors

- Poeppl thta cnat speel (or don't bother trying)

- People that underline things

- People that think they're smarter than everyone else (know-it-alls)

- Adverts (especially those disruptive/laggy flash ones)

- Looping music on web pages and no controls to turn it off

- Stupid flash objects that are supposed to make the site look 'cool' when it really looks like it was made by a 10 year old (and it probably was)
Indyan
- Porno ads on non-adult websites.
- Pop-under/overs etc.
- Small font.
and yes background audio. I absolutely hate this as often I am listening to music while surfing.
visumedia
well, to start out, i really do hate pop-ups also, there are lots of other creative ways tho companys get to advertise, so online has tons and tons of advertisement which can be a peeve on mine, i especially hate it when u try to click back and a site has soem code, that will not allow you to click back, and you have to close the browswer then re open it in order to use your browswer again. Thats what i hate the most. I also hate the sites that have large images and fonts, it takes forever to load but yet i cant close it because it might be interesting. I also hate the sites that have crazy colors. Another pet peeve of mine is sites who have tons of cookies and get your ifno and email you nonsense, i do like porn, it's pretty cool. but there are some crazy porn out there. I also hate ad-ware and spy-ware. it's crazy out tehre guys, surf safely.....

Another, sites that have crazy art or background and music that takes forever! you know those myspace pages? that have like 10-20 video clips embedded onto their site? man it's crazy...

When shopping online on some sites, my postal code is used to determine which items are available and at what price.
now, if i was writing a script that used this crieria, i would pass it from one page to the next with a session and a cookie, wouldn't you?
It is terribly annoying to visit a site and be asked for the SAME information on EVERY page... and then they expect me to actually buy something. They think i should trust them with my credit card number!???
Don't get me started. i'm just getting warmed up Twisted Evil

I love the IPB style emotions. But not the big bloated ones I have seen on many forums.
raine dragon
I like emotions, in so much as it permits you to add a tone of voice to your typing.

If, for example, I were reprimanding a user on my forum for triple posting a post, I might add some gentle little comment at the end like "it's all right, no harm done, just try to pay more attention next time ^_^ "

The main reason being it's bad enough that I'm getting on their case, I don't feel the need to make them scared of me at the same time. It just seems a lot more friendly.
Agent ME
What I think is one of my biggest internet pet peeves - people that have multiple email addresses that aren't connected (by connected, I mean one is set to download or forward another's messages, or the user is smart enough to check them together).

I can understand having a work address+personal address, but it's so annoying when people say they have a @yahoo.com, and a @gmail.com (maybe even an @msn.com email because they couldn't figure out how to get msn messenger to work on their existing address) address for the heck of it and say they only check every other one some times...
friuser
I have alot of pet peeves. I'll list a few that I can remember right now

1) I hate the use of shortcuts and acronyms that are not emotions on forums. On some boards it should not be done since it's not text messaging and you are making alot of new users confused and even regulars because some acronyms mean more than one thing!

2) Arguing and trying to get the last word. We all do it but some are just horrible. The worst thing is it's usually from people who have alot of post counts and should know better but they just spam like the worst of them and rewarded by admins.

3) Registrations. This is the most annoying especially to just read a post! omg! I have an extremely long list of accounts in multitude of websites.

4) Pop ups, interspatial ads, anything that blocks the reading material. I use popup blocker but those flash and javascript ads that pop in the middle of the display are horrible.

5) Automatic audio running when visiting a page.

6) Google search results. I find it finds less of what I want as time goes by.

1. Opening my mail and having 100 mails about money siphoned off Nigeria which is there just waiting for me. Always Nigeria- i wonder why!

2. Bad English. Specially in forums. I can quote some good examples from Frihost itself. I know English is not the first language for the majority of us but come on, just how hard is it to try and make sense.

3. People who feel that they have to get personal so as to keep the debate/discussion alive in a thread. Or people who believe its a crime if you don't believe what they believe.

4. People who preach their religion and then spread venom about other's believes. I mean, c'mon, do you think you'll ever get anyone to convert on the net?

5. I'm REALLY tired of the anti-America and pro-America groups and threads.

6. Forwarded mails. Hate them. No matter how funny, cute, sexy they are. For that matter hate forwarded sms-es too.
tony
my biggest pet peeve of the internet has got to be myspace.
Arnie
I'm mostly sick of all the Firefox ads that are thrown in your face. E.g. when you go to driverguide, they actually detect your browser with a script and give you a lecture if it's IE. Brick wall
[FuN]goku
Oh god... i have tons.. but ill give you my biggest ones..

1) Script kiddies who think they can hack.

2) MSN Annoyers (people who try msn exploits on you)

3) People who use msn plus

4) People who bug the hell out of you for info on... programming .. or whatever... like

"How do i do this?" or "Ohhhh whats this do?" or
"uh so i did this.... no wait.. i messed up how do i do this again" <- This one gets annoying if you are doing this over an IM where you can scroll up and 'READ' what the person explained 'AGAIN'

5) Limewire users o.O

6) Social networking site addicts (myspace, facebook etc..) ... funny nuff, my stepmom is a facebook addict XD

7) Free website designer sites (piczo , freewebs)

Cool Blogs (No point in them....)

9) Sites with music that you cant disable, while im trying to talk to a mate on voicechat.

10) My final one. People at school who say they have a friend that 'hacked' into the schools system, cuz theres no one in my school capable of doing that. Not any students and probly not the majority of the teachers. Just makes me wanna haul off and punch em when they say that.
doppleganger
some of my peeves are

1. pop ups and porn junk mails
2. some goddamed person trying to give me the money from nigeria
3. sites playing music online, dude if i want to listen i will listen to what i want, not to what u r making me lsiten
4. spam n chain mails
Technaut
Autorun audio on a website, popups, and people who have screen names like xxXLoOk_I_aM_sUcH_a_NoOb2645Xxx.
hofodomo01
Lol websites with 2000 era html that are still running really bug me >_<
Chiperiu
Let's see, I've got a few myself, but I'll just list the most common.

1) Poor grammar in a website, with typos, weird constructions and so on right from the first bits of text from the homepage. No respect for themselves, the customers and the ones browsing.
2) SPAM of any sort, including the idiots that like to register people in spamming websites.
3) Chain mails and IMs - I know many users are really simple, to put it mildly, but do they really need to make 2) happen over and over again just because they're superstitious or downright afraid of anything that moves?
4) My greatest has to be the impossibility of making a solid point over a forum, because nonverbal communication is quite a challenge to obtain in such an environment.
CMA
- popups, especially ones with music and/or sounds ("OMG, NO WAY!".... GAH!!)
- forwarded chain-letters (oh, how I hate thee...)
- spam-mail and "enlarge your BODYPART" emails
- videos/websites tagged with every single word in the dictionary to get more views
- websites by little girls... you know... those flashy pink websites with lots of stars or shiny effects all over and filled with hearts, pictures of friends and famous men, more smilies than words, and bad poetry (and any combination of the above). fangirls are so annoying...
