I'm a student (Spanish and English, plus a couple of languages on the side to keep me occupied) and sometime waitress/shop girl/coffee girl. I'd love to wind up translating literature of some sort, but I imagine such jobs are far and few between, so I suppose I'll just slog it in the city for five years and then give it all up to raise dozens of children.

My absolute dream job would be to translate poetry from Spanish into English. I'd love to do something a bit freelance where I could work from home and up-sticks and move any time I felt like it.

I am a student as well. I'm taking college classes through my high school, and I'm going to college full-time next year! I'm very excited about living on campus!

My job is to remove enough gunk to keep customers from complaining and do it without injuring my ligaments or anything else, which is sometimes a challenge. I also get paid to say weird things to busers and ask cooks how many kid plates it would take to serve a kid. I think we DMO's need a union.

Man... that must really feel good. I am not much into social work, but I really like the company of older people. I don't what is it? I'm a student Smile and hopefully i will be a programmer. This is my plan to rule the world Smile). I'm at my first year as a student and i have another ... 2 years after this one. Hm.. after that another 2 ears for master etc... plans plans... probably i will take a job and code some cool stuff. (of course the learning process doesn't stop Neutral. I will have to choose another domain to study it. So basically my job will be to be a learner Smile) )

Btw ... it sucks that in my country (Romania) a 6th grade kid knows more stuff about physics, math, about the language he speaks, chemistry, etc. , than a 10th grade from western countries like France, Germany, UK etc... Why it sucks ? Because you need to learn that stuff.. and you spend less time playing etc... but at least you know that you can't start a TV with your AA size battery Smile) (like people on YouTube do)

Because too much chauvinism isn't good for you.

Besides, the average 11-12 year old (grade 6) lacks the required level of abstraction to understand even basics in chemistry, while most 15-16 year olds (grade 10) are able to grasp them.

Utopia GFR
Interesting topic here.

I didn't have the chance to find right away a suitable job after my studies in mass media communication (I have a bachelor degree).

After graduating in 2005, I had various experiences (radio host, school coordinator, communications, etc...) but mostly as a volunteer with no salary at all (just transport costs refund).

Working on behalf of several companies gives me a significant added value to my CV and professional skills.

I can tell that some employers prefer to choose candidates (in a recruitment process) who really managed to prove themselves in the market (whether they managed to get a contract or not).

Now the sad thing is that many people I know who hold degrees in extremely popular fields (for instance, law, medicine, psychology,...) are often condemned either to be legally unemployed or to work in fields where they don't fit at all because they need to survive in our capitalistic society.

I've been through lots of interviews and I know very well the strain of not being the one chosen.

Hopefully for me, this month might be the good one because I'm about to achieve the last round of a job that totally matches my degree and skills.

Should I be the one, then it would be "Communications manager" in a non-profit organization Smile

My website pays for my computer related expenses so yea, then working over the summer pays for a *very* small amount of my college costs, ugh even with in-state (I'm a resident of Illinois) cost it's really expensive. I couldn't imagine being from another state/country and paying the full $27,000 a year in tuition Shocked.

I graduated from High School last year, and I've studied Business Administration during the first semester of 2008. Dropped out of college because the course was so oh-so-boring (no offense to whoever does this - it's just not meant for me). This semester, I've enrolled in another college, for Literary Studies this time. Now I have to take two tests, and if I'm approved, I'm in. Yay! But the course only begins next year, so yeah, I'm pretty much doing nothing right now.

Again a sharp turn after 3 years, when I change my career to office work, working with Eveready battery, after that joined a car manufacturer, a trading company and with 7-Eleven (Malaysia) for nearly 15 years). Now my last career is in IT Retails. Hopefully this will be my last......

I am a lowly Paramedic and English teacher. Most times I travel with NGO's to other countries to teach English and/or volunteer in hospitals. Now and then I get the opportunity to work in poverty stricken areas, or places where natural disasters or war have caused much suffering, and I get to help alot of people. I really like my job, but it is sometimes very difficult to deal with.

Wow, you make my life sound so very selfish! I have been doing this for about 7 years now, and have been to quite a few countries. That's originally why I got into it, I just love to travel. The most difficult situation... tough question. Natural disasters are pretty bad, because it's so chaotic, and most times it's far worse than it seems in the beginning. But I think, for me, the most difficult situations are the personal ones. Doing AIDS/HIV testing is always sad, especially in places where the people I'm testing can't afford the treatment.

My expenses sometimes get covered. Depends what I'm doing. If I am teaching, then it's much easier to get expenses covered by the school or company I work for. The NGO's usually don't cover much, if any. I end up going staying with host families most times, and pull double duty between my work and helping the family in order to earn my keep. All in all, I really don't earn much money, but I don't really care for that, I'm single with no kids(just my dogs), and I get to do what I like.

Good stuff! I would imagine that some of the areas you are that there is not always protection from the US Government. Do you get permission for carrying a gun? How do you look after your own personal safety?

I've only been under the protection of the US Government one time. Other than that, I pretty much rely on my coworkers, who in turn rely on me. And we all rely on our own judgment and intuition. Then there's the local Governments of the places we are in, which for the most part, do their best. But it's not always easy(or even a priority) for them to keep an eye on all the foreigners working in their country.
I usually just stick to a few rules. No running off with strangers to go partying, try to follow local customs and laws as much as I know how, and just keep a semi-low profile.
Oh yeah... I never carry a firearm. Foreign gun laws tend to be far more strict than here in the US. I was armed one time, but it was absolutely necessary.

Right, pretty much the best ones to follow. Guess if one should get involved with a gun, even in self-defence, it could turn into something really nasty. Even in the United States, an expat that would have a gun on him/her when it has been used in "self-defence" may be doubly suspicious to the police.

There's just so much more to consider when one decides to arm themselves in a foreign country.

Here in Florida, for example, we have the 'Castle Doctrine' law. To simplify it, it means that if someone forcibly enters my home(or vehicle), I can use any amount of force I deem necessary, including deadly force.

If someone came through my window one night and I decided to use a firearm to redecorate my walls in "brain matter gray", chances are I would not have any charges leveled against me, and I would likely be set free after a few hours of making statements to the police.
If I were in a similar situation in a foreign country(even assuming I was allowed to have the firearm), things would not be so easily dismissed, even if it were clearly a case of self defense. It's unlikely I would go to prison for murder, but my detention during the investigation would be longer than if I were a citizen. The Consulate/Embassy and my employer would all be involved, it may actually create an international incident, depending on the circumstances, and I would definitely be deported. Might even lose my job.

This is all under the assumption I am in a country friendly to Westerners. The tricky thing is that my job sometimes takes me to places where people who look like me make good negotiating chips. And some countries just don't care, if this scenario were to happen in Beirut or Tehran, it could be a long time(if ever) before I see the light of day again.

I work in Customer Service for a company called SilverSneakers which is a fitness program for folks on Medicare. We assist in checking eligibility, looking for participating fitness center locations, and we also do some tech support when they try to log into our website for the first time. It's a very relaxed company.

It's nice. It's the first call center I've ever worked at which allows you to wear jeans and t-shirts. It's very relaxed, and as a result it allows us to be relaxed yet professional on the phone. It's too bad that some people who "used" to work here couldn't see that. This place is a breeze compared to most call centers.

I'm only a contractor, but I am hoping that in the near future I can be hired on with full benefits as a corporate employee.

I'm working as a computer Operator, It is hard to upgrade by CV by working in a different field other than my study.
Further, I would like to suggest others that, although the job is small and has less salary, you should work in the field that you have studied academically or where you will devote your life in that field. Specialization in a field will return more that you would expect. Disperse experience will make you handicapped.
