Project Green Hands

Global Warming is not a new topic. Everyone is talking about it. Either supporting it or dismissing it as a hoax. For those of you who support it, here is a success story.

Project Green Hands, an ecological initiative of Isha Foundation, aims at creating 10% extra green cover in Tamil Nadu, a state in the southern part of India, by planting 114 million trees by 2010. This has the potential to create a net 30% forest cover, which is the national aspiration. This forms the first step to save this piece of the planet.

On 17th October, 2006 Isha created a guiness world record by celebrating a Mass Tree Planting Marathon and ending up planting 852,587 saplings. This was achieved entire by volunteers including school children. They will also look after the plant for 2 years making it sure it survives, and replanting if the sapling dies. Their goal for year 2007 is 25 million.

Sadhguru, the founder of ISHA, has this to say:
Quote:
On this day, what all of you have done is a privilege very few in this world enjoy. You have created something far bigger than yourselves, and will live well beyond you. This massive expression of concern and commitment for the well-being of all is unique and I am sure it will inspire many around the world to emulate the same.

Note: The website is undergoing a major revamp. If you remove the index.php, it'll take you to their TEMPORARY BETA page, and it does not have much information.

About a year ago I read an article that stated there are more trees today than at any other time in recorded history. The article claimed that even though trees are being cleared for construction, lumber, etc., trees have been planted at a higher rate. This is fine but I have to wonder if old growth trees convert more carbon dioxide to oxygen than saplings do.

I suspect that our problems with global warming stem more from pollution than it does from a lack of trees.
