hahaha..
check on possible spywares, trojans, virus, incompatible programs/process and incompatible user.. hahaha.. kidding..
Cooling, driver errors, over-use of RAM, memory leaks.....
There are many possible reasons. I have experienced a cornucopia of them myself. Possible reason(probably not even close to all of them):
Memory leak
Motherboard is dying
Hard drive is dying
PSU is not good enough
Video card is bad
Bad cpu
Virus
Program running that's affecting the system
There is many more. A way to find causes is basically to troubleshoot the issue. Substitute a part one by one to check if it's a hardware problem. If that doesn't work then it is a software problem.

For Anti-spyware I would recomend the following 3 used together.
AdAware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Spybot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
SpywareBlaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Anti-Virus - Try http://www.nod32.com
OR use one of the numerous online scanners.
McAfee or Symantec.. There's at least 12 I know of that are WELL known.

If you post more details we can prolly give u right reasons. I think Omega 2K listed most of the reasons apart from 1 which I have seen in many pcs is dead cpu fan or dust in heat sinkers . This will make the cpu over heated and your pc will freeze or reboot.
If you are experiencing the problem, post more details.

Some pieces of hardware, if they are not fixed properly.
You should consider reformating your computer atleast once a year to clear all the spyware and viruses you can't get rid of. If you install and uninstal files alot than you need to get rid of the junk in your registry that windows will still try to run. You should reformate when you can't use programs on your computer anymore.
This has been happening to me a heck of a lot lately. Every so often, no matter what programs are open, Windows simply freezez. Just there, frozen. Can't open Task Manager, can't do anything at all. I have all the latest Windows Updates and scanned for viruses with no result. I may be trying a scandisk, but I'm wondering if that'll be a waste of time. Any ideas?

Go to System information, and see how much available physical memory you have. If it is lower than 100mb when you startup, then it is time you add your RAM or change computer.
LOL! It's 1.96gb. Anyhow, I did a scandisk, and nothing has happened since - touch wood. On a recent scan, Norton Antivirus picked up 2 forms of adware, which I doubt had anything to do with the problem, but were destroyed anyhow.
their are lot of reason why computer freeze but you can download some software the can kill some deadlocks....try to serch one i forgot the name...
I think the most likely cause is driver, yes, not registered driver ,this is my self experiences.
I had some corrupt ram that did this once. Have a go with http://www.memtest86.com/ and if it comes up bad you can open your computer take out the RAM stick, cleaning the contacts with a lint free cloth and a dab of denatured alcohol - only handling the RAM stick by the edges, and re-insert it.
