Immortality?
So here's the question, would you chose immortality over a mortal life?
and why?
and why?
I suppose that depends on the world you're going to live in. I don't think I'd want immortality in this world... there is too much wrong with it, so much evil, death and destruction. If you were the only immortal one in this world, you'd have to watch all those you love and care about pass away. If you couldn't be killed, either, then you'd live through every disaster until the end of time. That's not a very appealing thought.
On the other hand, supposing a perfect world, immortality would be the norm and hence perfectly alright. There wouldn't be any pain or suffering or loss. If it were a perfect world, then I'd choose immortality. I have so much to do and there never seems enough time to do it all. Eternity would resolve that problem.

I hate the thought of "forever."
I definitely would not want to be immortal.
I definitely would not want to be immortal.
People who give no thought to the question would most probably say immortality.
However Mortality is probably best.
Just think of the horific things you'd witness if you lived forever.
I'd like to ideally have a semi-mortality.
Where you live forever but can choose when you want to die.
Think of immortality. You'd be like Dr. Who.
Destined to wander the world (instead of universe) alone.
People you love, you'd watch them grow old and die.
Your family and friends. You'd be left alone.
You'd get bored.
Personally i think immortality would be a punishment. A torment.

Let's say I am immortal. I'm 20 years old and suddenly I'm immortal. Does my body continue to regenerate new, healthy tissues and cells? Do I continue to develop physically as I would normally age as a mortal or am I forever trapped in a 20 year old body? Can I still develop cancer or catch the common cold? Do I continue to become wiser than before? What does immortality really mean? I can imagine being 500 years old and basically a pile of severely weathered flesh and bone. I can also imagine being 500 years old and wise enough by this time to have trained my mind and body to do incredible things. Personally, it's hard to decide which I would choose because I don't really know what immortality would mean. I think that because it's such a far out, mythical idea- something that defies natural law and really doesn't fit into any sense of realism in the long scheme of things- that it becomes a personal matter of perspective and purpose, which there is no ultimately better or worse answer to.
I've thought about this many times. At first I thought it would be cool to be immortal. you know, you get to see the world develops, know many things. There are a lot of things I want to know from the past. I reckoned that if maybe I had lived since then and was immortal, I would know the answers. but nah.. sure I'd know lots and meet lots too, but that's just about it. I definitely do not want to live my life being left behind by the people I love.. worrying about how to get by day by day. it will cause me too much pain.
I agree with divinitywolf. I'd like it better if I can choose the time of my death. hehe.

I had this discussion with a friend of mine in high school. It got pretty heated. She was all for immortality, while I went for mortality. I can't imagine living forever, it makes me feel so tired. And though you'd get to see a lot, you'd lose so much, and I'm just not built to handle that. Also, I'm of the mindset that the temporal nature of things is something that greatly gives meaning to them. Without death, life wouldn't mean much.
Think quality; not quantity. If you live until about eighty, you'll have natural problems, but soon after your life will be pretty crappy.
