you want to get adobe premiere, at least 2.0, cs3 is now out.
editing is like telling a story, especially for a documentary, you should layout a story arc and base your editing off that.
Well, if its a local station and you aren't a professional. I would highly recommend Adobe Premiere Elements 3. You can pick it up for under 100USD. It is very simple and easy to learn but is capable of doing very powerful things,
Good Luck!
Sony Vegas! - HAving used a wide variety of software as a professional i have setteld on Sony Vegas. Cheap as chips and is amazing versatile while being super easy to pick up and learn.
I am looking for a freeware video editor. I need to convert from one video type to another, cut and join videos and add some text at the beginning of the clip and at the end. Any free good ones that can do it?
well, i am using adobe premiere pro 2.0 and also some others video editing software. and i think adobe premiere is better. easy to use and it is efficient. but you will need time to master it, other wise, you'll only can make simple video editing using it until you had really understand how it works. oh, another thing is the hard disk size have to be big enough. for me, i'm using 200gb hard disk and i am still not satisfy with it. bigger is what i mean.
jipmerite, if you look for a freeware, then i think windows movie maker is good for you. and a good software normally not a freeware.
i recommend you to use the adobe premiere.
its the best i can think of. its expensive but its worth the price when it comes with its efficiency.

If you're using a Linux box I would highly recommend Cinelerra, it is very good.
i think i should first try this otherwise go for the commercial ones
If you have the cash and can run Linux, check out Apple Shake and Fusion...
If it's a one time thing, invest in Sony Vegas. I find it is easier to pick up than Premiere.
But whatever floats your boat, seriously. Get a few demos try them out, it's your decision.
a very good program : jasc animation pro try it but only for little movies
Adobe Premiere Pro
It's the way to go

These are the best words of advice here so far. All the diffrent applications have their pro's and cons and its impossible to give impartial advice. Try the demos and you will be able to decide for yourself.
I use and would reccomend using a combination of programs. For simpler and quicker tasks or for large tasks with only simple actions I would reccomend Ulead Videostudio whichever the latest edition is. It's very simple to use and is also fairly quick with simple projects. For anything above simple tasks and something more in depth I would use Adobe Premiere 2.0 or the most updated version and Sony Vegas as they both support complex functions...I believe on some projects I've used Adobe After Effects for some great effects and complex tasks. Adobe After Effects seems to contain more possibilities for filters and pleasing effects, in my experiences Adobe Premiere has only the basic effects and transitions while you'll find that after effects has a bit more expandability and functionality. It's best to use After Effects in conjunction with Premiere though, as to avoid any program compatability issues. That's what I do to get things done, hope it helps!!
Final Cut Pro is definitely the easiest and most reliable in my opinion, but definitely not for use on Windows.
