Just Starting in HTML

Jaxom
I'm trying to start working in HTML, but I don't really know where to start. Does anyone know a website or book that can help me learn the basics without assuming I know anything about HTML? I have tried a few sources, but they usually go into too advanced concepts too fast or they are extremely slow in teaching my what I need to know. I'll accept a slow and tedious method, but I would prefer if someone could give me a better option.

html.net is quite a good place to learn HTML and CSS. Just start from Lesson 1 and work your way up. Very Happy Well if you have any questions you could just ask here in the forums.

google up html tutorial.
There´s plenty of information out there and it all depends on how you like to learn.
I personally started with a book in german: Das Grosse Buch WebDesign, because I was intrested in design then...
Maybe you like formalisations and standarts, maybe you like design, or other.
Just google and enjoy.

Here are some decent tutorial sites.

I find http://www.w3schools.com the best by far!

Some neat tutorials can be found at http://www.tutorialtastic.co.uk.

I also find the best way of learning HTML is messing around with codes until you get it right because sometimes you won't understand the tutorials right away...

What do you plan on using HTML for? I mean are you trying to make a website or just wanting to learn it for fun? Smile

I'd also suggest buying a HTML book from SAMS. These are easy to read and to follow, regardless of your knowledge level.

SAMS books are pretty easy to follow, I agree. Also, check your library or even take a weekend html class at a community college if you have one around. They are short, less expensive that any 16 week class, and you can ask lots of questions and watch people code.

w3schools is great too as mentioned several times. Also, for me at least, it really helped that i typed everything in notepad when learning instead of using an editor. It really gave me more of an understanding and you don't get confused by so many options and buttons etc.

Good luck!

I really like www.htmldog.com - there's no annoying ads and it covers a fair amount of ground quite thoroughly. Also, it has a great reference section.

I'd agree with what whitehole said - I almost always hand code my HTML code even now. While big software packages can be great for quickly whacking together pages, they almost never code things exactly they way that you would.

when i read your question ... i kinda remembered my old days when i started out with html......
i started out twith a book known as Complete Reference: HTML ..... and it gave me good insight into web development overalll as well......

then i guided many students in web design and i also recommended them to start with book...... if you dont want to buy it you can download the ebook from net... it will be easily availabe on torrents.... best of luck
