Which counter/tracker do you recommend?

patasarriba
I'm checking out statcounter.com and their free version looks pretty good...I think there are also some PHP/CGI ones that you can install on your own website but I've never done that myself. Which ones do you guys recommend? Does anyone have any experience with statcounter?

I do have an account with statcounter.com I believe... but I never really liked it. I currently use http://www.extremetracking.com and it's wonderful! Awesome! Smile It's really easy to understand they are really accurate... (in my opinion). You should try it out!

The only thing I dislike is that I change the code a little... not modifying it but... well here is an example... this is the code I have to put on my website:

Code:
<div id="eXTReMe"><a href="http://extremetracking.com/open?login=reichm">
<img src="http://t1.extreme-dm.com/i.gif" style="border: 0;"
height="38" width="41" id="EXim" alt="eXTReMe Tracker" /></a>
<script type="text/javascript"><!--
var EXlogin='reichm' // Login
var EXvsrv='s10' // VServer
EXs=screen;EXw=EXs.width;navigator.appName!="Netscape"?
EXb=EXs.colorDepth:EXb=EXs.pixelDepth;
navigator.javaEnabled()==1?EXjv="y":EXjv="n";
EXd=document;EXw?"":EXw="na";EXb?"":EXb="na";
EXd.write("<img src=http://e1.extreme-dm.com",
"/"+EXvsrv+".g?login="+EXlogin+"&amp;",
"jv="+EXjv+"&amp;j=y&amp;srw="+EXw+"&amp;srb="+EXb+"&amp;",
"l="+escape(EXd.referrer)+" height=1 width=1>");//-->
</script><noscript><div id="neXTReMe"><img height="1" width="1" alt=""
src="http://e1.extreme-dm.com/s10.g?login=reichm&amp;j=n&amp;jv=n" />
</div></noscript></div>

But this is how I like to modify it because I'm a neat freak with coding and I do not have XHTML on my site, so I like to fix the closing tags.

Code:

<div id="eXTReMe">
<a href="http://extremetracking.com/open?login=reichm">
<img src="http://t1.extreme-dm.com/i.gif" style="border: 0;" height="38" width="41" id="EXim" alt="eXTReMe Tracker"></a>
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
var EXlogin='reichm' // Login
var EXvsrv='s10' // VServer
EXs=screen;EXw=EXs.width;navigator.appName!="Netscape"?
EXb=EXs.colorDepth:EXb=EXs.pixelDepth;
navigator.javaEnabled()==1?EXjv="y":EXjv="n";
EXd=document;EXw?"":EXw="na";EXb?"":EXb="na";
EXd.write("<img src=http://e1.extreme-dm.com",
"/"+EXvsrv+".g?login="+EXlogin+"&amp;",
"jv="+EXjv+"&amp;j=y&amp;srw="+EXw+"&amp;srb="+EXb+"&amp;",
"l="+escape(EXd.referrer)+" height=1 width=1>");//-->
</script>
<noscript><div id="neXTReMe"><img height="1" width="1" alt="" src="http://e1.extreme-dm.com/s10.g?login=reichm&amp;j=n&amp;jv=n"></div></noscript>
</div>

I also like to add a target="_blank" to the URL so that it opens in a new window for me when I click on it... However, even if you modify little things that aren't necessarily going against their terms of use... they close your account until you fix it and have them check it (which takes like a couple seconds). That's the only things that upset me, however, I would never use any other tracker!

Hope I helped !

yes http://www.extremetracking.com/ is really good but my first preference would be http://www.opentracker.net/index.jsp

Visit it and just go to any other page than the homepage, you will see a sidemenu showing your profile with your past data with the site. Really impressive. (But no free version of it is available).

I signed up for extremetracking.com last night. They seem pretty good so far! So hopefully I won't have to install any CGI stuff.

My favorite is Google Analytics. It is invisible to your users, always good, and has a large number of tools that help you find out how your guests get there and where they go. Quite incredible, actually.

I've always been a big fan of http://www.histats.com/

Lots of very nice counters to choose from, and the info is good too. Probably not as powerful as some of the others mentioned here, but for me, it works just fine.

I use Google Analytics, but for a really good analytics service check out Clicky. I like Clicky more than other trackers because it allows me to track individual visitors and I think that's important on smaller sites. Clicky is also very clean and easy to use.

i use both extreme tracker and google analytics but i got difference in both results

Thanks jylan, I'll have to check that out.

I think that the best combination would be StatCounter together with Google Analytics. Very Happy I've been using StatCounter since 2003, and so far, so good. In terms of monitoring your visitors, it is superior to Google Analytics because you could easily pinpoint who's who and who owns which IP address, who typed in certain keywords, and where they exactly came from. Google Analytics is great for monitoring trends and keywords and it works well with AdSense, I guess [I wouldn't really know--I don't have adverts], but you won't be able to identify your visitors' habits. StatCounter even allows you to add labels to certain IP addresses, so it would be easier to know if your "rival" visited your site, for instance. Wink StatCounter even allows you to create a blocking cookie that would prevent you from logging your visits--a very valuable feature so that you won't mess up your own stats! Very Happy They also have invisible tracking, so you don't need to worry about your site looking 1990s-like. XD

The only negative thing that I would say about StatCounter is that so far, they've had around four [or more] downtimes. That's still really good, though, in a four-year span. Very Happy

OK, so at the moment I've got Clicky, Google Analytics and Extreme Tracking all installed... just put Clicky in (thanks, jylan!) so I still have to wait and see if it's good. I have been pretty disappointed with Google since it doesn't let me track individuals...I'm sure that their "trends" thing is good for bigger websites, but I still consider 10 hits in one day a minor miracle. Hopefully Clicky will be good.

Never EVER EVER use counters which are displayed on the HTML to guests. It makes your site look cheap and desperate for hits.

I reccomend you look at the HTML Hell page.
